About the Position

The Associate Athletic Director for Human Resources and Administration serves as the principal staff officer of the department to develop, implement, and manage the department's human resources as well as serving as a senior staff member of the department. This position provides timely, necessary, and accurate information for decision making on Human Resource matters. The incumbent works with the Athletic Director, Deputy Athletic Director and Sr. Staff, and serves as the appropriate administrator for administrative staff in the department. Responsibilities include the day-to-day management of the Human Resources operations and staff personnel functions for the department. Incumbent has broadly delegated authority for administrative functions, and for collaboratively working with members of the University Personnel group personnel practices and guidelines.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

-Serve as the appropriate administrator for all department staff and the liaison between Athletics and Human Resources for processes and practices.

-Manage matters pertaining to contracts, staff performance evaluations, collective bargaining agreement interpretation, grievances, complaints, disciplinary actions, and other personnel issues in close consultation with Human Resources.

-Ensuring compliance interpretation with university policies and procedures, oversee department onboarding and provide guidance to search committees on processes and practices. Create/update the employee manual and manage departures.

-Analyze staff compensation, surveys, reports and forecasts. Manage the interface between HR processes for staff activities such as: classification and compensation reviews, reassignments, position description development, managing budgetary constraints, budget adjustments within HR and financial software. Maintain employee records and files. Payroll and leave reporting oversight. Assist business office with financial processing in areas outside of Human Resources.

This is a position in the CSU - Management Personnel Plan (MPP), and serves at the pleasure of the President. This position will require adherence to University compliance training such as: Conflict of Interest and Ethics, AB 1825 Sexual Harassment Prevention, Information Security, and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. The person hired for this position may be required to complete an outside employment disclosure statement in accordance with Title V of the California Code of Regulations.

Education and Experience

-Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent work experience
-Three years of progressively responsible full-time work experience in Human Resources

Preferred Qualifications

-Master's Degree in related field
-Demonstrated experience in a NCAA Division I environment
-Five years of experience working in a University Human Resources and/or Finance & Administration division

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

-Proficient in NCAA, SJSU as well as Mountain West Conference rule and regulations.
-Thorough knowledge and demonstrated experience in human resource procedures.
-Excellent communication, interpersonal and responsive skills to establish and maintain professional and cooperative working relationships with administrators, faculty, staff, and students.
-Ability to exercise initiative, flexibility, good judgment and discretion; works well independently and as part of a team; assimilates from oral or written sources, a broad knowledge of CSU and agency policies and procedures and apply them consistently.
-Strong skills and experience in the area of employee relations.
-Background and ability to work in a collective bargaining labor relations environment.
-Candidate must have the ability to read, analyze, and interpret common technical concepts, reports and legal documents.
-Ability to respond to complex inquires or complaints from regulatory agencies or members of the university community.
-Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies.
-Knowledge of and demonstrated experience in budgetary procedures, and appropriate software programs.
-Ability to quickly learn and apply People Soft HR and Financial systems.
-Demonstrated strong analytical, problem solving and writing skills with experience using word processing, spreadsheet, database management, layout and editing programs with ability and desire to learn new programs.
-Strong oral communication skills.
-Must possess excellent customer service and public relation skills.
-Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions.
-Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical solutions.
-Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions and to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
