About the Position

The College of Science Advising Center (CoSAC) Advisor provides academic advising and related student services for undergraduates in the College of Science. Such services may include guiding entering and continuing students through academic planning and successful paths to graduation, helping students find solutions for issues they may face, informing students about and authorizing students for relevant university services and resources, participating in College of Science Advising Center (CoSAC) programs, events, and projects, and advocating relevant constituents to address student needs. The incumbent will utilize a variety of advising strategies and academic support services to insure student retention and success through graduation.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public or business administration or a jobrelated field and two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field.

A masters degree in a jobrelated field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications

-Demonstrated experience providing academic advising to undergraduate students at a comprehensive public university or community college
-Experience working with and/or advising students in the Science/STEM disciplines (Biology, Chemistry, Math, etc.)
-Demonstrated ability to use software applications such as google docs/drives, excel spreadsheets, word processing, and databases
-Masters in Counseling, Counselor Education, or Social Work

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

-General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.
-Ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required.
-Ability to rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned.
-Knowledge of university policies, major, GE, university and system requirements for graduation.
-Understands the institutions interpretation of FERPA rules for the release of student information to faculty, parents, students, etc.
-Ability to collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data.
-Ability to recognize multicultural, multi-sexed and multiaged value systems and work accordingly.
-Effective communication skills particularly with diverse populations.
-Knowledge of current student success practices.
-Demonstrated ability to use software applications such as google docs/drives, excel spreadsheets, word processing, and databases.
-Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts.
-Ability to adhere to strict confidentiality and other ethical standards.
-Effective presentation skills.
-Knowledge of university policies, major, GE, university and system requirements for graduation.
-Ability to work collaboratively with others.
-Knowledge of current student success practices.
