About the Position

Under immediate supervision, and in accordance with schedules and periodic instruction, this position is primarily responsible for the general upkeep and maintenance of the campus grounds, ensuring a clean, safe and attractive learning environment. Position makes decisions based upon sound grounds maintenance practice. Researches and recommends supplies and materials for area of responsibility.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

-Operates hand tools for area clearing, pruning, cutting, debris removal, minor irrigation repairs, and general landscape maintenance.
-Maintains and operates powered equipment such as leaf blowers, push-type lawn mowers, lawn edgers, line trimmers, pole saws, and reciprocating hedge trimmers for vegetation maintenance and clean-up.
-Mixes, spreads, or sprays fertilizer, herbicides, or insecticides to promote plant growth.
-Manicures, cuts, removes, and cleans up vegetation and debris to maintain aesthetics.
-Monitors and promotes plant growth by providing water, light, and soil nutrients and aeration.
-Operates utility cart, pick-up truck, power landscape equipment, and ride on sweepers/mowers to transport tools, personnel, and waste materials.
-Operates, cleans and inspects irrigation systems, valves, drainage, related equipment and areas to identify problems and needed repairs.
-Disables and clearly identifies (lock out and tag out) unsafe equipment, and immediately notifies appropriate personnel.
-Unlocks and secures equipment and areas to be maintained.
-Consults and works with other trade workers, as needed, for completion of maintenance tasks or associated repairs.
-Operates radio or cellular phone for communication of urgent needs, critical information and status updates.
-Records work details in log sheets and keeps time records to assists in completion of documentation.
-Responds promptly to, and assists with, urgent needs - preventing injury, damage, or further incident.
-Attends and participates in departmental meetings, trainings and functions.
-Maintains clean work areas, tools, equipment and associated structures.
-Uses protective equipment, as required, for personal safety.

Education and Experience

One year of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or in general grounds maintenance work, or in related manual labor. Requires the possession of a valid California Driver's License for the operation of any vehicle or equipment required for position and in any emergency situation. Must participate in all OSHA required physicals and examinations.

Preferred Qualifications

-Commercial grounds and landscape experience including lawn edging and grooming.
-Litter, trash and green waste removal experience.
-Tree and shrub care experience, including pruning and tree supports.
-Sprinkler maintenance experience.
-Pesticide and/or fertilizer application and/or spraying experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

-Thorough knowledge of general gardening and grounds maintenance methods.
-General knowledge of proper methods of planting, cultivating and caring of hedges, ornamental trees, shrubs, lawns and flowers.
-Knowledge of the use and care of gardening materials, supplies, tools and equipment.
-Ability to recognize the more common species of ornamental shrubs, trees and flowers grown in California.
-Ability to perform strenuous physical work; mechanical aptitude and motor coordination.
-Ability to use a variety of hand and power tools.
-Ability to learn to operate skillfully small trucks and power-driven grounds equipment.
-Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position.
-Ability to follow simple oral and written instructions.
-Ability to interface positively with co-workers, students, staff and faculty.
-Ability to perform all work activities in a safe manner utilizing safety guidelines and equipment.
-A valid California Drivers License is required at time of hire for the operation of any vehicle required for this position.
-Must be able to complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for CSU campuses and pass the course exam.
-Must be able to accommodate a work schedule that varies according to operational needs and may include evening and weekend hours.
