About the Position

Reporting to the Sr. Director, Associate CIO, Infrastructure Services, the Infrastructure/Data Center Specialist supports computing infrastructure in various data centers and communication closets campus wide. The incumbent in this position is exposed to data center technologies and support systems and serves as a resource for deployment, maintenance, integrations, and upgrades for these technologies. The incumbent directly leads the development of and manage the execution of plans, schedules, budget, communication, status reports and deliverables for multiple simultaneous projects; ensures project tasks, timelines, scope and resources are properly executed and maintained, and provides general oversight and leadership to project teams comprised of IT staff, and campus teams.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Data Center Support:
- Support data center and network closets campus-wide. Be the IT subject matter expert on data center power, cooling, and other services. Oversee the maintenance of data center systems, maintain data center related documentation.
- Maintain as-built documentation and plans for all data centers.
- Request work orders for maintenance.
- Arrange for and escort workers as they perform data center maintenance.
- Advise and assist staff and management in the selection of software, hardware and/or services and sources to meet data center requirements.

Operating Systems Support:
- Assist operating system analysts to provide effective monitoring and support of data center services to ensure problem resolution, system access, and optimal system performance.
- Provide support and maintenance to the data center system monitoring, deployment, configuration, administration and maintenance.
- Troubleshoot and resolve system problems and document resolutions. Prepare operational and service delivery procedures, create Service Level Agreements (SLA) with SJSU Campus departments.
- Work with IT staff to understand data center requirements and integrate needs.

Data Center Security Monitor:
- Serve as IT point of contact and subject matter expert for physical security of the data centers and network closets.
- Develop and maintain physical security documentation and provide training of proper procedures.
- Ensure security of protected and sensitive data areas.
- Work with vendors and SJSU staff to maintain security of centers.

Infrastructure Project Oversight, Direction & Management
- Provide application and infrastructure project direction, project management, general oversight, leadership, and direction to the IT team on assigned projects, including campus department staff, IT Staff, outside consultants, vendors, and stakeholders.
- Facilitates meetings and serve as a liaison between technical teams, senior management, departments, campus staff and faculty for IT.
- Achieve operational objectives by contributing information and recommendations to strategic plans and reviews; preparing and completing action plans; implementing production, productivity, quality, and customer-service standards; resolving problems; completing audit; identifying trends; determining system improvements; implementing changes.
- Define IT Infrastructure project scopes in collaboration with senior management and other IT and campus departments.

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related fields, or similar certified coursework in applicable fields of study and three years of experience supporting information systems and technology.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with and understanding electrical, HVAC, and band-width infrastructures of the data center.

Experience in Data Center practices (i.e. basic fault tolerance, cable routing, calculating power usage).

Experience leading a technical team providing support and service.

Experience supporting infrastructure systems and technology.

Experience in High Education infrastructure.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

- Demonstrated ability to effectively create and maintain complex documentation.
- Knowledge of data center technologies, rack systems, console KVM systems, servers, environmental power, safety systems, storage and building HVAC power.
- Demonstrated understanding of SJSU procurement processes.
- Ability to apply consultative skills to assess user needs and provide 35% appropriate support.
- Ability to analyze systems requirements and research systems availability and access methods.
- Ability to integrate multiple systems using standard software packages and analyze and monitor systems performance and usage
- Knowledge of systems administration principles and techniques.
- Basic knowledge of network administration and a demonstrated understanding of SJSU physical security processes.
- Ability to effectively create and maintain complicated documentation and proficiency using standard software packages.
- Ability to analyze systems requirements and research systems availability and access methods.
- Ability to apply consultative skills to assess user needs and provide appropriate support.
- Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills in working with users/staff to interpret needs and provide appropriate solutions
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of current project methodologies, practices, standards and processes and tools.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze and organize project tasks, dependencies, and resources required to achieve desired outcomes
- Demonstrated knowledge of resource management planning.
