About the Position
Academic Advising & Retention Services (AARS) is a learning support, academic assistance, retention and service-oriented unit within Student and Faculty Success Services in the Division of Academic Affairs. Assisting students from admission through transition to graduation, our mission is to facilitate successful student persistence through the completion of the baccalaureate degree.
The Data Technician creates/designs, maintains and updates multiple databases and runs and provides reports as needed to track student success and to provide appropriate unit assessment. The Data Technician collects, compiles, analyzes, and evaluates data and makes verbal or written presentations based on the results. The Data Technician may consult with other AARS staff and/or external agencies regarding data as well as the creation/design of data reports and/or databases. In addition, the Data Technician alerts the Director of AARS to additional questions/issues that arise from the data analysis and may recommend process changes and/or additional databases.
Education and Experience
A bachelor's degree and/or equivalent training and two years of administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices, or programs.
-Bachelors degree in related field (i.e. data management/analytics)
-Demonstrated experience using a variety of database applications (Oracle, Excel, File maker of particular interest)
-Demonstrated experience with basic statistical analysis
-Demonstrated experience writing reports and summarizing data
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
-Ability to take initiative and independently plan, organize, coordinate, and perform work in various situations where numerous and diverse demands are involved.
-Skill in the research, development and evaluation of policies and programs, including skill in the collection, evaluation, and interpretation of data to develop sound conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.
-Expertise in investigating and analyzing problems with a broad administrative impact and implications. Ability to anticipate problems and address them proactively.
-Demonstrated ability to effectively interpret, organize, and present information and ideas in written or presentation form.
-Thorough knowledge of policies, procedures, and outside regulations pertaining to the applicable program and/or administrative specialty.
-Working knowledge of databases (CMS, Excel, Filemaker in particular).
-Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive information and communications with employees and external agencies.
-Ability to reason logically; ability to collect, compile, analyze, and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on the data.
-Ability to perform basic statistical analyses.
-Ability to formulate and recommend solutions to unusual situations and problems or process improvements using good judgment, a high degree of initiative and creativity.
-Ability to work independently and in a team setting.
-Demonstrated ability to interact with staff on a one-on-one basis and in-group settings.
-Working knowledge of technology and software applications such as: word processing, spreadsheet, database management, and communication tools. Ability to quickly learn PeopleSoft.
-Ability to perform accurately and efficiently in a detail-oriented environment.
-Ability to plan and execute multiple work priorities, organize and plan work and projects.
-Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies.
