About the Position

Under limited supervision, this position is responsible for managing all aspects of the campus leave programs including, FMLA, Non-Industrial Disability Insurance, Leave Without Pay. The incumbent is responsible for ensuring processes, procedures and applicable federal and state laws are followed and will work with employees, managers, health care providers and third-party vendors to ensure a smooth transition back to work. The incumbent must be proactive in his or her approach and is expected to provide expert advice and guidance to employees and managers throughout the leave process.

This is a position in the CSU - Management Personnel Plan (MPP), and serves at the pleasure of the President. This position will require adherence to University compliance training such as: Conflict of Interest and Ethics, AB 1825 Sexual Harassment Prevention, Information Security, and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. The person hired for this position may be required to complete an outside employment disclosure statement in accordance with Title V of the California Code of Regulations.

Education and Experience

Bachelors Degree in Human Resources, Communications, Public Relations, Marketing or similar; or equivalent, relevant experience is required.

Two (2) years experience working in a Human Resources department or function is required.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working in higher education
Experience managing leave programs

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

-Strong knowledge of the Human Resources function and how it supports the campus community
-Working knowledge of state, federal, CSU, collective bargaining, and SJSU policies and procedures related to leave
-Knowledge of state and federal FMLA regulations
-Knowledge of Non-Industrial Disability Insurance
-Basic knowledge of medical terminology

-Strong oral and written communication skills
-Strong customer service skills
-Strong organizational skills

-Ability to multi-task and manage numerous projects and cases simultaneously
-Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive matters
-Ability to communicate at all levels of the organization
-Ability to learn and use a variety of software applications including PeopleSoft HR and the California state payroll system
-Ability to work effectively in team environment
-Ability to establish rapport with a diverse campus community
-Ability to solicit feedback
-Ability to problem solve in difficult and complex situations
