Program Director, Student Academic Support
I. JOB OVERVIEW
Job Description Summary:
The purpose of the office of Student Academic Support is to provide comprehensive cognitive skills development and remediation programs to medical, graduate, and PA students with the School of Medicine and Health Science (SMHS). The office serves all students in SMHS by providing programs to help promote effective and efficient life-long learning. In addition, remediation services will be provided for students who are struggling academically.
Reporting directly to the Senior Associate Dean for M.D. Programs, the Program Director of Student Academic Support will overs the mission of the office and will be a direct provider of student services. The primary responsibilities of the Program Director include:
• Conducts individual diagnostic interviews and consultative activities for medical students and others in the areas of learning and test taking strategies, time management, and preparation for licensure examinations and board certification.
• Plans and leads group sessions in time management, study strategies, learning theory, test taking skills, requesting feedback, and strategies for effective learning in the hospital, ambulatory settings, or other settings.
• Participates in orientation and board review programs as needed.
• Plans and coordinates tutorial sessions in basic science and clinical learning, to include the recruitment, training, and supervision of tutors.
• Attends classes, seminars, tutorials, and other educational activities to gain thorough exposure to current educational content and methodology.
• Reviews course and clerkship materials, including textbooks, websites, practice examinations, and other media for effective student assistance.
• Meets individually with students who fail an exam or course to assess the student's current learning strategies and level of academic functioning, and provide services/interventions as appropriate.
• Serves as an advisor and ex-officio member of the Disability Committee.
• Maintains files for each student who receives services from the CSP.
The Program Director also acts as a liaison to various internal and external constituents:
• Maintains contact and serves as a resource to basic science and clinical faculty on learning issues and maintaining an optimal environment for learning.
• Interacts regularly with others offering student support, e.g., Student Affairs and Medical Education.
• Serves as a consultant to the PA Student Progress Committee as well as the Academic Progress Committee.
The Program Director is expected to maintain a high level of professional activity:
• Participates in professional activities consistent with academic rank.
• Collaborates in research efforts regarding student performance and retention.
• Attends medical education conferences.
• Participates in medical school activities, including service on committees.
Performs other work related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the positionMinimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 7 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 5 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:
Ideally, the Director will have a Ph.D., Ed.D, or equivalent degree with specialization in the process of learning and remediation at the highest levels of academic functioning.
In addition, the candidate will possess knowledge of learning disabilities and the provision of reasonable accommodations in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Previous experience working with medical students in program development and individual remediation is required.
