Job Summary

The Mellon Museum-Library Collection Ethnographer is a two-year grant funded position, overseen by the Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Lucy Scribner Library. We are particularly interested in candidates from under-represented backgrounds who can add to the diversity and excellence of our academic community.

This position will be a key component of "The Stories our Collections Tell: Primary Sources at Skidmore College," a project funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The project's goal is to understand and eventually promote these collections and make them accessible in new ways to a wide variety of campus audiences. To this end, the incumbent serves as project manager, creating a campus-wide inventory and utilizing ethnographic research methods to generate thick descriptions of primary-source collections across campus.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Identifying and providing collection-level descriptions of primary-source collections across campus

  • Interviewing faculty, staff and students to gather data on collections

  • Understand how campus users expect to discover and explore primary source collections

  • Planning and coordinating visits by key experts in the fields of special collections and art museums

  • Minimum Qualifications
    • Advanced degree in museum or library studies, or relevant subject area
    • Demonstrated understanding of the role of primary source materials in teaching and learning settings
    • Familiarity with ethnographic research methods
    • Ability to speak in front of groups and work with students, faculty, museum and library colleagues
    • Strong verbal and editing skills
    • Detail oriented and highly organized
    • Enthusiasm for collaboration and team-based work
    • Ability to work independently

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Understanding of college curriculum design and effective pedagogy
    • Demonstrated experience designing and conducting ethnographic research in a campus setting
    • Familiarity with best practices for primary source collection assessment and discovery

    • Physical Demands (For Union Positions Only)
