Pomona College, one of the nation’s finest liberal arts colleges, invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for the position of Vice President for Student Affairs/Dean of Students. The senior officer charged with creating and managing a vibrant student life program, the VP/Dean provides dynamic and purposeful leadership for a comprehensive program of co-curricular programs and services and works closely with faculty, staff, and students to uphold and improve upon Pomona’s traditions of shared governance and a deep commitment to student learning both inside and out of the classroom. 

Reporting to President G. Gabrielle Starr who joined the College in the summer of 2017, the VP/Dean serves as a member of the President’s Executive Staff and is an active participant in all aspects of institution-wide planning and policy development. The VP/ Dean oversees a comprehensive student affairs program with 56 professionals including Associate Deans who lead the following areas: Campus Life (including Housing and Residence Life); the Draper Center for Community Engagement; the Smith Campus Center; the Queer Resource Center; Student Media; Personal Success and Wellness; the Asian American Resource Center; the Career Development Office; Chicano and Latino Student Affairs; Student Development; and Title IX Coordinator/Clery Officer. Together with their staffs, this talented team is responsible for the planning and direction of all Pomona College programs in the Division of Student Affairs.  Student services in the areas of health, counseling and chaplaincy are provided through the shared services of the Claremont Colleges consortium. The VP/Dean participates as an active member of the consortium’s Student Deans Committee which guides the programs and services of the consortium. The VP/Dean works collaboratively with the Associated Students of Pomona College (ASPC) to ensure that the student voice is represented in the activities and deliberations of the student affairs areas of the College.

The VP/Dean will be a visionary thinker who will reflect the deepest values of the college. The VP/Dean will build on Pomona’s strong tradition of campus life and bring to the college deep knowledge of current thinking in student affairs and a strong belief in the essential link between diversity and excellence. The successful candidate will have an advanced degree, preferably in higher education administration or student personnel, with a doctorate preferred; at least ten years of progressively responsible and relevant experience, a demonstrated commitment to collaborative teamwork with a talented staff and engaged students; and demonstrated success in community building with an ethnically, culturally and economically diverse student body.  Partnerships with faculty and academic affairs colleagues are essential to maximize the benefits of the residential liberal arts environment and the opportunities for learning outside of the classroom. The VP/Dean will have deep knowledge of student affairs organizations; a keen awareness of current college student trends and issues, (including mental health and wellness; Title IX, inclusive community building, the particular concerns of International students) and will demonstrate the ability to effectively assess programs and services.
