The Director of Business and Operations is a professional who applies knowledge of accounting, budget, and business practices for multiple units across campus. The units have diverse funding sources (operating, gift, endowment, contracts, grants, etc.) and expenses including a variety of functional activities, programs, and services. The Director of Business and Operations reports to the Executive Director of Shared Services, and serves to support the units senior leadership teams. The Director of Business and Operations oversees the Business Officer who works on the details of daily transactions, such as journal entries, deposits, procurement and payment requests, payroll approvals, HR hiring, and position monitoring. The position will work closely with multiple stakeholders on the budget process, create reports to clarify issues, and acts as a strategic partner for the units. The right candidate will have proven skills and the ability to financially manage projects from inception to completion.

Essential Functions

  • Conduct financial management responsibilities for multiple units funded by a broad range of funding sources
  • Requires a comprehensive understanding of accounting and budgeting practices in order to submit operating budgets and prepare project/capital expense requests
  • Responsible for recommending and implementing long-range strategic planning goals, and growth projections
  • Provide support to the budgetary planning and forecasting process
  • Analyzes moderately complex business operations and financial statements; and provides analysis to enable leaders to make recommendations for approval
  • Monitors all current-year activity including keeping detailed records
  • Understands, implements and ensures compliance with all University policies and procedures
  • This position is a strategic partner for multiple units to help them develop a procurement strategy
  • Communicate clearly with internal and external constituents
  • Work with others to analyze and resolve issues and problems
  • Supports development of studies and analysis of budget related items
  • Supports activities that impact and interface with other functional areas
  • Develops and monitors internal policies and procedures to meet business needs, which may have moderate impact, including negotiating with external entities and constituents

  • May perform other duties as assigned


  • Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination or education and experience
  • 3-5 years of experience working in financial environment
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel


  • Related masters level degree, or equivalent combination or education and experience
  • 5+ years of experience as a business officer working with budgets
  • Experience working with state, federal and private grants and gifts
  • Advanced knowledge in any or all of Banner, Kronos, and Concur
