The Associate Dean of Student Affairs and Director of Residential and Student Life serves as a vital member of a collaborative and engaged Division of Student Affairs senior team providing leadership for an innovative Student Life department that includes Residential Life, Student Activities, the McKeen Center for the Common Good, and the Schwartz Outdoor Leadership Center. This position is responsible for leading and managing the strategic priorities, initiatives, and activities that ensure all Bowdoin students have access to a dynamic educational experience within and beyond the classroom. The Associate Dean is also instrumental in fostering an inclusive community at the College. At Bowdoin, students are afforded a unique opportunity to create the culture and community within which they want to live. The Associate Dean, who has four direct reports and oversees a Student Life team comprised of 17 professional staff, leads this talented team who guide and support hundreds of student leaders as they help shape their community. The Associate Dean also routinely partners with students, staff, and faculty to cultivate an environment where students engage in experiential learning through active engagement in the life of the College, their residential living communities, student activities, the community beyond Bowdoin, and the Maine outdoors. The Associate Dean must couple imagination with a demonstrated ability to execute and implement existing and innovative programs and projects. Strong and consistent leadership in all areas of student life will allow the Associate Dean to focus on the development of new and exciting projects such as renovating and building new upperclass residence halls; assessing the future of the College Houses; developing a comprehensive leadership curriculum for all areas of Student Life; and designing and implementing a model for the sophomore experience at Bowdoin.

This position is a year-round position (.92 FTE) working eleven months each year with vacation, and not scheduled to work time being taken during summer, winter, and spring breaks. Regular hours vary due to needs of the College or division. A flexible schedule is necessary. Evening and weekend work hours and limited travel required.The ideal candidate will possess a Master's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The successful candidate will: enjoy a fast-paced work environment where the needs and priorities shift from moment to moment; possess a highly collaborative and results-oriented working-style; have experience supervising and managing both individuals and teams; proven strategic planning and execution skills; an ability to inspire and motivate teams in the pursuit of common goals; sincere engagement with students, the campus community, and the community beyond Bowdoin; broad understanding of student development theory and the ability to develop innovative leadership and training programs; superb writing, public speaking, and interpersonal communication skills including the ability to build rapport with students, communicate effectively with a wide range of constituencies, and develop relationships with staff, faculty, parents, and alumni; and the capacity to make and stand by difficult decisions and to successfully mediate and navigate conflict. The successful candidate must also have an appreciation of the diversity of our community and be able to communicate effectively across difference. A proven track record of understanding, valuing, and supporting fully inclusive communities is required.
This position fosters cross-campus and external collaboration for the Student Life departments and oversees the daily operations including staff hiring and retention and budget management of the Office of Residential Life. The candidate must possess vision and creativity, and exceptional administrative skills. A sense of humor is required!
