The Department of Teacher Education and Curriculum Studies in the College of Education at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for the position of Science Education Lecturer and Program Coordinator for Science Education Online. This is a full-time, temporary two-year, non-tenure track position with a preferred start date of September 1, 2018.

The Science Education Online (SEO) graduate program combines the expertise of education and science faculty and K-12 teachers at the University of Massachusetts to develop science and science education courses that are inquiry-based and have strong hands-on components. SEO was developed jointly by UMass Amherst and UMass Lowell faculty in Education, Science, and Engineering. Upon completion of this program, participants will earn a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree [fulfilling requirements for professional licensure] or an Education Specialist Degree (Ed.S.).

The ideal candidate will have experience in science education, online instruction, curriculum management, program assessment (NCATE, ELAC, CAEP), admissions, student and faculty recruitment, licensure programs, working with faculty, and student advising. The ideal candidate will also have a commitment to increasing diversity in the STEM fields. Required Qualifications: Applicants must hold a doctorate in education or a related field. Applicants must also have a strong commitment to and a proven track record in teaching STEM education in a K-12 setting as well as a commitment to social justice in education.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience teaching at the graduate level (face-to-face and/or online) and experience blogging and maintaining a website desirable. Experience with coordinating an education program, course scheduling, and collaborating with instructors and staff across departments highly desirable.

Responsibilities:

Key responsibilities include:

  • Advise roughly 25 students per year through their program of study and facilitate program admissions with faculty across campus.
  • Teach science education courses online in the SEO program, and be available to teach a face-to-face class at the doctoral level in the area of science/STEM education.
  • Program development, including creating and administering the SEO blog, revising the SEO website as needed, and developing recruitment materials and exploring strategies to increase enrollment.
  • Facilitate program scheduling in collaboration with faculty across campus, including recruiting colleagues to teach current and new courses and support SEO faculty with online teaching.
  • Licensure and maintenance of program assessment, including working with the College's undergraduate advisor on professional licensure, manage accreditation process through NCATE, write licensure data reports, and work with the Director of Graduate Studies on transfer of courses and graduation requirements.
  • Meet on a regular basis with the faculty of the Math, Science, and Learning Technology concentration to discuss program initiatives.
