Full-time Faculty in English and Humanities (Rank Open)

The American University of Afghanistan (AUAF) in Kabul is a private, non-profit, nationally accredited university offering an American-style liberal arts education. The Department of English and Humanities is seeking qualified candidates to fill four full-time faculty positions in the Department of English and Humanities, teaching at the undergraduate level, and participating in curriculum and program development. It would be expected that successful candidates begin work in the Fall Semester, 2018.
Position 1 - Assistant/Associate Professor of TESOL: the candidate will have a PhD in TESOL or related degree. Duties will include participation in the development of a teacher-training unit at AUAF, designed to meet national educational needs for English. The successful candidate would also play a key role in teaching in this program, once implemented. Preferably the candidate will have specializations in any of the following areas: English-language teacher training, ESL curriculum development, program design.
Position 2 - Assistant/Associate Professor (Humanities or Social Sciences): the candidate will have a PhD in any humanistic or social scientific discipline as well as a TESOL qualification and/or experience in second language/academic writing teaching. Duties will involve participation in the development and implementation of both the Writing across the Curriculum and General Education programs, as well teaching on the existing Academic Writing program.
Position 3 - Assistant/Associate Professor of TEOSL and Persian: the candidate will have a PhD in a humanities subject with qualifications and experience in TESOL and Persian literature and/or language (Dari or Farsi). The successful candidate will teach in the General Education program in both the area of his or her primary specialization and in the Persian-language General Education requirement. The candidate will be expected to participate in program development.
Position 4 - Assistant/Associate Professor of Rhetoric & Composition: the candidate will have a PhD/MA in Rhetoric and Composition with experience in teaching Academic Writing and/or ESL. Duties will involve teaching in the Academic Writing program and some supervision of the Writing Center. Interest and experience in the humanities and/or the teaching of journalism would be an advantage.
Applications are also welcome from those nearing completion of their PhD (ABD). Candidates with graduate qualifications other than those listed above, as well as sustained teaching experience, are encouraged to apply.
- 12 credit hours of teaching per semester;
- Participation in program and curriculum review and development;
- General departmental and university citizenship; e.g., service to the university in some capacity, either on committees, advising students on academic affairs, or assisting the Department Chair with various administrative tasks;
- Participation in research and/or professional development projects. Research projects may be supported through faculty development grants.
- Experience teaching in international locations or multicultural settings preferred.
- Rank will be commensurate with qualifications, experience, and the needs of the University.
- If hired, the successful applicant is expected to provide official proof of academic degrees (transcripts sent from the degree granting school directly to AUAF)
