The Program in Teacher Preparation is Princeton University's teaching certificate program that prepares undergraduates, graduate students, and alumni to qualify for the state teaching license. Reporting to the Director of the Program in Teacher Preparation/Teacher Certification, the Assistant Director will work with students in Social Studies, including the supervision of clinical work in schools. The Assistant Director will also assist with teaching the program's interdisciplinary courses and the administration of program initiatives.
Teaching and Supervision:
The Assistant Director will have the responsibility of working with Social Studies candidates and assisting in the teaching of the program's interdisciplinary seminars. The Assistant Director will:
- Supervise the student teaching of Social Studies students and work with school practitioners to promote the development of students' knowledge and skills as classroom teachers.
- Advise Social Studies students at all levels in the program, meet with advisees regularly, and monitor the progress of students and update student records.
- Serve as a primary contact for University departments in Social Studies and develop recruiting strategies for attracting Social Studies students and alumni to the program.
- Serve as an instructor or co-instructor in the program's seminar courses and assist in course revisions and development.
The Assistant Director will have administrative responsibilities focusing on program areas that engage school districts or individual schools. The Assistant Director will:
- Develop relationships with school personnel to collaborate in the clinical placements of student teachers in area schools
- Serve as primary liaison with school districts for all levels of clinical placement including but not limited to ensuring that all students meet district requirements such as health and background checks.
- Assist with the administration of the Teacher as Scholars Program in terms of identifying faculty for seminars, communicating with participating schools/districts, preparing for seminars, and overseeing the seminar logistic requirements.
- Administer the High School Program by interacting with school contacts, holding information sessions for high school students, overseeing the application and placement processes of students in University courses, and interacting with University department representatives.
- Administer and develop school fellowships by interacting with representatives from the international schools to develop and support the student application processes for the fellowships.
- Perform other program duties as needed, including participation in national accreditation processes, serving on award selection committees, and the planning of special events and projects.
- A doctoral degree related to teacher education.
- Teaching experience in K-12 public schools in Social Studies.
- Familiarity with research-based teaching and best practices in Social Studies instruction.
- Experience teaching in higher education and/or experience in supervising or mentoring pre- or in-service teachers.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including strong writing skills.
- Ability to use a variety of instructional and productivity technologies.
- Familiarity with the CAEP accreditation process.
- Familiarity with the edTPA performance assessment.
