College of Engineering: Open Rank Faculty Theoretical Particle/Nuclear Physics- Department of Physi

Job description

The Department of Physics invites applications for one or more full-time tenure-track or tenured faculty positions in Theoretical Particle/Nuclear Physics, beginning as early as August 16, 2018. Areas of interest include nucleon or nuclear structure, lattice gauge theory, collider phenomenology, and model building. Appointment is expected at the Assistant Professor level, but appointment at a higher level will be considered for exceptionally well-qualified candidates. A Ph.D. or equivalent is required, along with the ability to teach effectively at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and to conduct a vigorous and significant research program.

Qualified senior candidates may also be considered for tenured full Professor positions as part of the Grainger Engineering Breakthroughs Initiative. Over the next few years, more than 35 new endowed professorships and chairs will be established in research areas that include big data. More information about the Grainger Initiative can be found at

The successful candidate is expected to interact with the high-energy theory group as well as the experimental high-energy group and/or the nuclear experimental group. The interests of the theory group include flavor physics, lattice gauge theory, phenomenology of theories beyond the standard model, early universe cosmology, and gauge/gravity dualities while areas presently covered by the experimental groups comprise beyond-the-Standard-Model and heavy ion physics at the LHC, double beta decay and electric dipole moments, QCD/nucleon structure, muon g-2, mu2e, neutrino physics, and observational cosmology. Salary will be competitive and rank will be commensurate with qualifications.

For full consideration, applications should be received by 30 October 2017. Applications received after this deadline will be accepted and considered until the position is filled, but are not guaranteed full consideration. To apply for this position, please create a candidate profile at: and upload a curriculum vitae, a publication list, a summary of research interests and accomplishments, and a statement of teaching interests and experience, and provide the names and addresses of four references. Please contact Margie Gamel at 217-333-3762 or [email protected] for further inquiries or questions.

The University of Illinois conducts criminal background checks on all job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent offer.

The University of Illinois is an Equal Opportunity, Affirmative Action employer. Minorities, women, veterans and individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply. For more information, visit To learn more about the University's commitment to diversity, please visit
