About the Position

Reporting to the Associate Vice President (AVP) of Transition and Retention Services and in collaboration with departments within the University, the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Retention Advisor promotes San Jose State University’s (SJSU) commitment to student retention efforts.  Working independently under general supervision, the incumbent is primarily responsible for complex tasks regarding processes related to admissions counseling, and retention of an academically strong, culturally diverse, and socially conscious undergraduate student population. The Advisor serves as the retention advisor and program coordinator for students who require academic support coaching. Coordinates and provides a range of services to Former Students Returning (FSR’s); supporting students’ varied needs as they pursue their educational goals, including: educational support, academic advisement, instruction, and related assistance. The objective in all interactions is to provide information regarding policies and procedures, to suggest actions that will resolve admission and retention issues, and to facilitate FSR’s successful return and integration into the SJSU community.  This position will also provide academic advising to all Guardian Scholar Program (GSP) students and plan and facilitate monthly GSP meetings. Work closely with Student Outreach and Recruitment and the Educational Opportunity Program to provide outreach presentations to prospective GSP students.
