Position Summary

The Nurse Practitioner in Acute Pain Service will provide direct medical management to selected patients under the supervision of the Medical Director for pain management.

Duties of a Nurse Practitioner - Acute Pain Service may include the following but are not limited to:

  • Provides direct medical management to selected patients under the supervision of the Medical Director for pain management. Management of patients followed by the Acute Pain Service including PCA therapy, peripheral nerve catheter and epidurals. Evaluation of and technical manipulation of intrathecal pain pumps.
  • Coordinates aspects of in-hospital care relative to pain management with select patients with the nursing, medical and hospital staff.
  • Maintains ongoing communication with physician collaborator relative to select aspects of patient care or administrative issues as needed.
  • Works as a team member, communicating patient care issues clearly and in a way that is advantageous to the team effort.
  • Provides clinical direction and supervision to Acute Pain Service nurses.
  • Assists with interviews and recommends selection of nursing staff for the Acute Pain Service.
  • Participates in the development and review of outcome data/metrics related to pain management. Conducts ongoing review and audits.
  • Interprets and develops policies to support decision making relative to pain management with select patients.
  • Participates in hospital committees and Co-Chairs the Hospital Pain Committee.
  • Acts as a resource to all hospital nursing and promotes ongoing nursing education regarding pain management initiatives.
  • Reports to the Medical Director for pain management and the Nursing Associate Director for Peri-Operative Services.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: Current NYS RN/NP licensure. NYS Nurse Practitioner certification. Master’s degree in Nursing. One year post-graduation from an accredited Master's degree Nurse Practitioner program. One or more years' experience in pain management, acute and/or chronic.

Preferred Qualifications: Pain Management certification. Minimum two years' management/supervisory experience. Proficiency in various computer programs.
