Position Information: Under the general direction of the Undergraduate Academic Advising Director of the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (CHASS), Office of Student Academic Affairs, the Academic Advisor provides fundamental academic advising to current undergraduate students and prospective students, primarily Undeclared and Pre-Business students. The Academic Advisor uses principles of developmental academic advising and knowledge of teaching and learning theory to promote academic, career and life goals in an effort to support student retention, timeliness to degree, academic success, as well as intellectual and personal development. Academic advising is the primary area of work and responsibility comprised of academic advising, program development and implementation, and other programmatic support duties.
Minimum Requirements: Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a service environment that is subject to frequent interruptions.
Experience working with students in a university setting. Experience working with a diverse student population. Skills requisite to advise/counsel diverse personalities using sound and mature judgment. Ability to work collaboratively as part of an advising team. Skill in working independently and following through on assignments with minimal direction.
Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving.
Ability to effectively, professionally, and tactfully interact and communicate, both orally and in writing, with students, faculty, staff and visitors. Skill in independently composing letters, memos, reports, and other written communication materials using correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, composition, text editing, and proofreading skills.
Skill in accurate record keeping with strict attention to detail. Skill in organizing tasks, documents and materials with efficiency and accuracy. Demonstrated computer proficiency using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access) or other equivalent software, the internet, email messaging, and web based software applications. Ability to learn new programs. Demonstrated experience using an online student information system.
Skill in setting priorities that accurately reflect the relative importance of job responsibilities.
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality at all times. Knowledge of the applicable federal and state regulations governing areas related to the responsibilities of the position, including the Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Ability to multi-task.
Thorough knowledge of department/school/college policies, procedures, and requirements.
Thorough knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Knowledge of multiple majors, colleges, and schools.
Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of the applicable University of California policies governing areas related to the responsibilities of the position. Ability to extract, compile, analyze, and present pertinent data effectively. Knowledge of web site design and maintenance. Demonstrated experience with SIS+. Intermediate to advanced Microsoft Access skills or similar database applications
Masters degree and 2 3 years of academic advising or related experience or equivalent combination of education & experience and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
Thorough knowledge of college/school policies, procedures, and requirements.
