The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a preeminent public land grant university and the flagship campus of the University of Illinois system, is seeking nominations and applications for the Dean of the College of Engineering. The next dean is expected to bring broad intellectual insights, top-tier scholarly credentials, and the academic leadership and managerial experience to pursue a bold vision for the College of Engineering. The position requires a leader with outstanding strategic vision; superior communication skills; excellent administrative and budgetary performance; promising capacity for fundraising; a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion; and adept management of cutting-edge undergraduate, graduate, and professional education in a comprehensive interdisciplinary university environment. Candidates will hold a terminal degree and have a distinguished record of teaching and scholarly accomplishments. Additionally, a proven record of achievement, commensurate with an appointment at the rank of Professor is required.
The dean leads a College of Engineering that defines paradigms for teaching, research, and engagement to produce the next generations of students and citizens that will spur continued innovation throughout the 21st century. The demand for Illinois Engineering baccalaureate, masters and doctorate programs continues to grow with more than 13,000 undergraduate applications and 11,000 graduate applications every year. Programs are offered by the ten departments within the College of Engineering: Aerospace Engineering; Bioengineering; Civil & Environmental Engineering; Computer Science; Electrical & Computer Engineering; Industrial & Enterprise Systems Engineering; Materials Science & Engineering; Mechanical Science & Engineering; Nuclear, Plasma & Radiological Engineering; and Physics.
The College of Engineering has established a strong relationship with faculty and students from two affiliated departments: Agricultural & Biological Engineering and Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering housed in the College of Agricultural, Consumer & Environmental Science and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, respectively. In addition, the dean oversees interdisciplinary units that provide critical resources and services to the College and also across campus. These include the Coordinated Science Lab, Frederick Seitz Materials Research Lab, Health Care Engineering Systems Center, Illinois Applied Research Institute, Information Trust Institute, and Micro & Nanotechnology Lab.

The successful dean is expected to contribute to a strong culture of cross-campus interdisciplinary research and entrepreneurial activity that are hallmarks of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The campus is home to world-class centers like the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology; the Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology; the Institute for Sustainability, Energy, and Environment; and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. Collaborations between engineers and life scientists, social scientists, humanists, artists, and physical scientists as well as other experts and scholars are the norm. New and emerging opportunities abound, including the Carle-Illinois College of Medicine, the first medical school to be founded at the intersection of engineering and medicine. The campus is also launching an engineering-infused Cancer Center, as well as the Siebel Center for Design, a large cross-campus, multidisciplinary effort to harness the potential of design thinking and design learning in teaching, research, and engagement. The nationally distinguished Research Park adjacent to the university offers opportunities for entrepreneurship and includes greater than 110 companies that employ more than 2,000 people in high-tech careers as well as provides opportunities for more than 650 student interns. This is a full-time, 12-month appointment with a negotiable start date and salary will be commensurate with experience.
