About the Unit
The University of Chicago Campaign: Inquiry and Impact (http://campaign.uchicago.edu), the most ambitious and comprehensive campaign in the University's history, is raising $5 billion to support faculty and researchers, practitioners and patients, and students and programs across the University. Launched in October 2014, the campaign supports priorities in every division, school, department, and institute, and aims to engage 125,000 alumni and friends over its five-year duration. The Urban Education Institute (UEI) bridges education research and practice to foster greater equity and excellence in public schooling (http://uei.uchicago.edu/). Combined, the Urban Education Institute's four units support educators and students or serve as a model for research-practice partnerships in 62 cities across 34 states. With a track record of producing nationally recognized educators, seminal research on the driving forces behind school improvement, and substantial gains in student achievement, the Urban Education Institute serves as a powerful model and mechanism for fostering greater equity and excellence in public schools across the United States.
- Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Development, Units & Initiatives, the UEI Director of Development creates and implements comprehensive strategies to identify, cultivate and solicit high capacity donors and prospective donors. The Director builds engagement of these individuals with UEI, and creates and refines gift opportunities based on UEI's priorities. S/he stewards the Institute's top donors and develops and executes donor recognition plans as appropriate.
- Create and implement strategy and coordinate all activity related to seeking philanthropic support for UEI, including identification, cultivation, solicitation, gift closure and stewardship of priority individual major and principal gift prospects.
- Develop and manage a personal pipeline of $100K+ solicitations while closing $1M+ gifts to UEI. Manage a select portfolio of 50+ high-level individual and organization gift prospects. Plan and execute a target of 24+ solicitations per year. Conceptualize, prepare and present proposals for support.
- Build relationships with key donors and volunteers, including University trustees.
- Design strategies to engage prospective donors, alumni, friends, and organizations to meet specific fundraising goals and priorities. Use programmatic components to engage potential donors and create opportunities for donor support.
- In collaboration with the AVP, Director, UEI leaders and faculty, governing boards, philanthropists and other volunteers create comprehensive, multi-year strategic advancement plans for UEI. Direct the implementation of the plans to meet annual and long-term goals.
- Conceptualize communications and outreach activities to cultivate, steward, and recognize top donors. Direct, monitor and evaluate the implementation of comprehensive UEI fundraising communications. Serve as a key spokesperson for UEI as needed.
- Serve as a senior leader at UEI to advance the unit's reputation and priorities locally and nationally.
- Work closely with UEI academic leaders and faculty to develop and advise on fundraising strategies consistent with University and UEI priorities. Provide briefings for and staff these leaders in their development activities.
- Monitor, analyze and report on overall results to internal and external constituencies. Serve as the chief staff liaison to the UChicago Impact Board and the UChicago Charter School Advisory Board. Represent UEI in the development and execution of a University of Chicago urban strategy.
- Monitor and manage annual budget. Address budget variances as they occur. Oversee and approve budgets for Institute events and activities.
- Hire, manage, evaluate, and develop staff as needed and assigned. Actively encourage staff members' professional growth and participation in the life of the University.
- Perform other duties as assigned. Seek opportunities for professional development that will enhance job performance, including building networks within the University and with colleagues at peer institutions.

Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree or higher required
- A minimum of five years of professional work experience in nonprofit management, development, alumni relations, marketing, public relations, sales or similar professional work experience required.
- A minimum of three years of soliciting and closing major gifts experience required.
- A minimum of three years of experience leading a project team or managing staff required.
- A minimum of two years of experience in managing senior leadership, trustees and board members required.
- Demonstrated record of organizing successful fundraising, marketing or membership programs required.
- Demonstrated success of meeting or exceeding goals required.
- Expertise managing a complex prospect and donor pipeline required.
- A minimum of one year of experience developing and monitoring budgets preferred.
- Experience soliciting and closing principal gifts preferred.
Technical Knowledge or Skills:
- Demonstrated skill and knowledge of, or ability to learn quickly, the internal workings of the University as well as the technology tools available to the Office of Alumni Relations and Development, including Griffin (the University's Donor Relationship Management System), Microsoft Windows computer environment, Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
- Willingness and ability to travel to campus and/or non-campus locations for University business.
- Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends.
