Required Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor's degree in journalism, public relations, communications, graphic design, English or a related communications field and experience in media relations and online communications.

  • Proven success managing cross-functional teams and strategic planning processes.

    Preferred Qualifications:
  • A master's degree within the field of journalism, communications, public relations or a related field.

    *5-7 years of experience in media relations and online communications.

  • Work experience in a public relations, marketing, university communications office, with additional emphasis on crisis and community relations experience.

    Job Description:
    Under the direction of the Vice President for University Advancement, who also serves as the Executive Director of the Development Foundation, the Assistant Vice President for Communication (AVPC) will provide vision and leadership for the university's strategic communications. Via comprehensive involvement with campus, community and state, the AVPC will elevate the strategic aspirations of Texas State University as a leading public research institution.

    The AVPC will develop a strong command of issues affecting campus, students, higher education, the community, Texas and nationally in order to provide optimal strategic scenarios for the University President, the Vice President for University Advancement and campus senior leadership.

    The AVPC will develop strategies and tactics for both enhancing Texas State University's image and reputation, and for coordinating university messaging through traditional and new media. The AVPC will be part of the university advancement leadership team and be involved with a campus-wide branding and messaging strategy which includes representatives from various offices. The individual will place high priority on understanding issues affecting the university and its students by anticipating multiple potential strategic outcomes.

    The AVPC will foster strong relationships both on and off campus with students, media, community leaders, campus leadership, deans, development officers, athletics and external organizations. The individual will develop and implement a system for harvesting news stories from all campus entities, alumni and community resources and optimally telling those stories in compelling ways through all available Texas State University media.

    The AVPC will serve as a primary contact to the news media and work proactively to highlight stories about Texas State University's successes. The AVPC will oversee University Advancement's various web sites and new media and implement enhancements to better achieve division and university objectives. The AVPC will have direct responsibility for all executive communications for university leadership and oversee a staff that edits a variety of communication materials including news releases, talking points, op-eds, pitch letters, feature stories and fact sheets, that position Texas State University as a leading public research university

    Job Duties:
  • Develop comprehensive understanding of issues affecting the university.

  • Proactively anticipate current events affecting campus and prepare communication scenarios for senior university leadership.

  • Develop strategic communications plan which builds upon the aspirational goals of the university including pursuit of top research university ranking.

  • Develop strong campus relations with administrators, student leaders, colleges, athletics, deans, Texas State University Alumni and university development officers.

  • Develop strong external relations with media, alumni, community leaders and donors.

  • Prepare regular briefings for senior university leadership.

  • Provide executive communication for the President, Texas State University and serve as the campus primary spokesperson.

  • Working with university marketing, oversees a national communication program directed at external audiences.

  • Manage traditional and social media marketing opportunities directed specifically to executive communication and advancement purposes.

  • Oversee the production of Hillviews magazine published three times a year.

  • Responsible for leading a team of writers, editors, designers and media relations professionals and ensuring quality output.

  • Leads the media relations program and provides strategic guidance on digital news room.

  • In response to campus crises, provide immediate communications strategies and serves on the Rapid Response Team and Incident Command Center.

  • Provide media training programs for campus and student leaders.

  • Participate in various University Advancement and university committees and management teams.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to secure cooperation from community representatives; ability to coordinate work projects, determine priorities, set deadlines and complete projects accordingly.

  • Strong verbal, writing and editing skills, including writing and editing content for electronic publications and the news media.

  • Managerial experience, supervising and directing the work of others.

  • Ability to quickly acquire a working knowledge of general purposes and objectives of a campus public affairs program.

  • Ability to conduct interviews.

  • Ability to coordinate work projects, determine priorities, set deadlines and complete projects accordingly.

  • Demonstrated effective communication with technical and non-technical individuals and groups at all levels of an organization.
