Role Summary:
Reporting directly to the CIO of Duke Health, the Chief Academic Information Officer (CAIO) will
be a member of the Duke Health Technology Solutions (DHTS) leadership team. The CAIO is
charged with the effective delivery of high quality IT services to the School of Medicine. This
includes the development and maintenance of research management systems, analytics
platforms, and other technologies in support of the school's research and educational mission.
The CAIO will lead a team of IT professionals focused on IT support, research applications, basic
science infrastructure, and data science. As a member of the CIO's cabinet, the CAIO will have
the ability to leverage shared Duke Health resources and provide guidance in the development
of new Duke Health services that empower clinical research, basic science, and medical
education. The CAIO will work collaboratively with the Vice Dean for Academic Informatics, as
well as IT leadership in the University's Office of Information Technology

Organizational:
The CAIO will report directly to the CIO of Duke Health. They will attend the CIO's senior
leadership team meetings and participate in relevant IT governance committees. A pivotal
relationship will be the Vice Dean for Academic Informatics (VDAI) who will be accountable to
the Dean for developing a robust informatics vision, managing the School of Medicine (SOM) IT
governance committees, and serving as the faculty thought leader over academic informatics.
The VDAI will have input into the CAIO's performance evaluation each year. The CAIO will
provide a monthly update of operational issues and resolution pathways to the VDAI, and on a
routine basis to the Dean and/or SOM IT Leadership Committee.
Other important relationships include the Vice Chancellor for health data science, the vice
deans in the SOM, department, institute and center directors, and the Vice Provost for
research.

Essential tasks/responsibilities:

· Collaboratively work with SOM leadership to instantiate their informatics vision using
innovative, robust, and secure technology architectures
· Provide accountability for all aspects of IT service delivery IT to the School of Medicine
· Work closely with research faculty, educators, and administration and support them in
accomplishing their technology related objectives
· Partner with peers in DHTS and OIT to implement best-in-class technical solutions for
research and education
· Orchestrate the technology infrastructure that empowers an enterprise research
architecture supporting machine learning, data liquidity, and other advanced
capabilities
· Leverage service level agreements to establish performance and cost expectations and
the metrics to manage them.
· Recruit and retain highly qualified research and medical education IT staff
· Effectively manage the SoM dedicated IT budget, and creatively look for opportunities
to improve the cost to value curve.
· Effectively manage the team of IT professionals in DHTS dedicated to supporting the
School of Medicine

Qualifications:

· A four-year degree in engineering or computer science or equivalent experience.
Advanced degrees are preferred
· IT professional with outstanding technical and management qualifications in an
academic IT setting
· At least 5 years of leadership experience managing complex, matrixed, and
multidisciplinary IT projects
· Collaborative personality willing to work across groups and functions to deliver the
highest quality IT service possible
· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential for this position
· Experience with cloud based solutions and working with data science communities to
develop and deploy advanced capabilities
· Significant expertise in sophisticated clinical data management essential as are proven
managerial skills with large, complex programs
