The Communications Specialist is responsible for implementing the strategic communications plan for two specific research programs in the Nicholas School: The Duke Superfund Research Center (DUSRC) and the CIPHERS Project.Specifically, this position works with the Research Translation and Community Engagement Cores of the DUSRC and the outreach component of the CIPHERS Project. This is accomplished by researching, writing, designing and contributing to effective and innovative communications including: research synthesis reviews, white papers, policy and research briefs, articles, website design, info graphics, and social media content.
Research and write research syntheses and policy briefs on topics in environmental toxicology, health, and genetics, including epigenetics. Conduct literature searches and literature reviews on topics in environmental health, toxicology,genetics, and environmental sciences. Develop website content, including original stories, articles, designs, videos, and integrated connections within social networks. Monitor site traffic using analytics tools across multiple platforms, including Facebook,Twitter, Instagram, and through the organization's website. Website design using Word Press is a desired capability for the position. Support outreach and communications about the research conducted at the DUSRC and CIPHERS project to diverse stakeholders such as state, federal, and local government policymakers, industry groups, and community-based organizations. Contribute to outreach planning and organization activities such as identifying stakeholders, planning public science events, trainings, and workshops. Support the creation of info graphics and graphical communications, such as fact sheets, aimed at translating technical research to non-technical and lay public audiences. Assist with internal communications, organizing quarterly newsletter, updating publication databases, and interacting closely with supervisors to ensure adequate coverage of research activities. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein. The above statements describe the general nature and level of work performed by individuals assigned to this classification. NOTE: Funding for this position is available via grants and is offered at the 0.75 FTE level due to the availability of grant funds. Funding for the position at this level is available until July1, 2020. Additional funding from new sources may become available during the funding period and there may be the possibility to increase the position to 1.0 FTE. The scope of work may shift slightly with changes to funding sources, but will remain aligned with environmental public health research translation and communications.
Preferred Qualifications at this Level
Bachelor's degree in a scientific field, preferably biochemistry, genetics, toxicology, or public health; or a bachelor's degree in communications. Work requires a combination of research and science communications skills with communication and marketing skills. These skills are normally acquired through a bachelor's degree in a related field, or through applied communications work and a bachelor's degree in the sciences. Training in the sciences, especially coursework in toxicology, biochemistry, genetics, or environmental health, is desired. Three years post-baccalaureate or a master's degree. Work generally requires 3 years post-baccalaureate related experience in science communications, research, marketing, media, or public relations. A master's degree in science communications, environmental public health, or other technical communications training, is desired.
Research and literature review, synthesis of scholarly journal articles, and ability to communicate complex topics inaccessible language are key skills for this position. Also desired are skills in using WordPress for content management and creation; experience using Adobe Creative Cloud software, including Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop; familiarity with ArcGIS suite of programs, including ArcMap; experience with Microsoft Office suite of programs; experience with social media, with preference for experience managing social media for an organization.
