Primary Function of Organization Unit: The NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH), established in 1983, is one of the highest rated veterinary academic medical centers in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina as well as many other states. The hospital staffs over twenty clinical services with board certified specialists that are nationally and even internationally renowned, ensuring the VH is on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine. Patients benefit from the combined expertise of multiple specialists utilizing a team approach to patient health care. Each year, nearly 25,000 patients are treated in the VH. The VH provides compassionate care, state of the art specialty health care, expert clinical instruction for 4th year veterinary students from College of Veterinary Medicine, and ongoing investigation of innovative techniques and procedures to further advance the field of veterinary medicine.
Essential Job Duties: This position supervises approximately 15 veterinary technicians/assistants that function in the Randall B Terry Companion Animal Medical Center (TC). The individual ensures that all patients in the patient care areas will receive high quality care by managing, recruiting, hiring and evaluating all direct reports. Effectively plans, directs and manages day to day operations of areas of responsibility. Also functions as a working technician for the departments, providing unique internal customer service, technical support, data collection, and patient care. Position is the primary point of contact for all activities relating to scheduling, patient care standard operating procedures, and staffing to ensure service area objectives are met and takes corrective action when needed. Position communicates with students, staff and clinicians to receive the most up to date information regarding presenting problem, diagnostics being performed as well as projected plan of care for the animal. Position works with small animal companion animals and exotic patients. Participates in human resources related responsibilities, including but not limited to; recruitment and selection process; conducts performance management; ensures human resources policies and related information is shared with employees; resolution of disciplinary and grievance issues; monthly time sheets. Ensures employees have access to tools and information for career development opportunities and delivers and oversees on the job training. Uses extensive knowledge of veterinary medicine to effectively plan, direct and manage day-to-day operations of areas of responsibility. Plans work operations and priorities daily or weekly to meet hospital objectives. Proficient in usage of specialized equipment in all aspects relating to hospitalized patient care. Provides post-operative support and monitoring, IV catheter placement for both short and long term vein access, venipuncture, IV injections, wound management, drug administration (IV, Oral, Subcutaneous), bandage care, blood transfusion administration, TPN administration, chemotherapy administration and various other routine diagnostic testing. Responsible for supervising, coaching, teaching, orienting and evaluating in the principals of patient care for all senior veterinary students as well as post-doctoral interns and residents. Records a variety of data relating to patient care, surgical procedures and preparation, and client communications. Provides quick and accurate information regarding each patient. Is proficient in entering data into electronic medical record. Maintains a clean working environment to ensure Infectious Disease standards are followed and infection is not spread. Handles all medical/biological and infectious waste appropriately. Follows all radiation safety, OSHA, and Environmental Health and Safety standards. Keeps all necessary equipment in clean and working order and has all necessary and appropriate stocked supplies available for procedures and daily patient husbandry. Manages resources, including budget and personnel; establishes priorities in the use of resources including space, equipment and/or facilities. Evaluates and modifies protocols to ensure excellent patient care and client service. Ensures adherence to procedures and work standards; recommends changes. Responsible for general oversight of units. Financial responsibilities include the continuing education budget, staff salaries, supplies and the fee structure for specialties to insure cost capture, industry equivalence and supply cost.
Department Required Skills: At least 5 years of previous veterinary technician experience. At least 2 years of experience as a supervisor in a veterinary teaching facility. Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors. Ability to communicate professionally and effectively at all times and maintain professionalism in emotionally charged / challenging situations. Ability to provide high quality customer service. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to work beyond scheduled work hours when needed. Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and be an active participant in problem solving and team advancement. Ability to work effectively with computers and electronics. Ability to maintain physical work for extended periods of time. Ability to work independently and practice good judgment to ensure high quality care for all patients and request assistance when needed.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: At least 7 years of experience as a veterinary technician in a clinical setting; preferably referral / tertiary care / teaching hospital.
Necessary Licenses and Certifications: Registered/Licensed/Certified by any state. NC Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) or eligibility for the NC RVT exam required. NC RVT exam eligibility requirements include graduation from an AVMA-accredited veterinary technician program and a passing score on the National Veterinary Technician Exam.
