The Chancellor invites applications and nominations for the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Innovation at the creative, growing, health-focused campus of the University of Minnesota Rochester. The Chancellor and the entire UMR community of faculty, staff, and students seek an innovative, collaborative, strategic leader who is passionate about learning as well as transformation and well-being in higher education.  

Position Description

The Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Innovation is the chief academic officer for the campus, reporting to the Chancellor and serving in this capacity in the absence of the Chancellor. The Vice Chancellor operates within objectives and policies of the University of Minnesota system as determined by the Board of Regents, the President of the University of Minnesota, and the Chancellor of the University of Minnesota Rochester. The Vice Chancellor advises the Chancellor on academic matters and works collaboratively with the other officers of the University of Minnesota system to meet the strategic objectives of the university. As a member of the Chancellor’s staff, the Vice Chancellor provides academic leadership and works collaboratively with other members of the Chancellor’s Senior Advisory Council. The Vice Chancellor also builds and sustains academic partnerships with other University of Minnesota system campuses, Mayo Clinic School of Health and Sciences, and other higher education institutions and industries to meet the workforce and innovation needs of Rochester and southeast Minnesota.

The Vice Chancellor will be an integral member of the University of Minnesota Rochester community, an eleven year old campus distinguished by our vision to inspire transformation in higher education through innovations that empower our graduates to solve the grand health challenges of the 21st-century. This role provides an exciting opportunity for an experienced academic innovation leader to engage in a culture of creativity and collaboration, serving as a catalyst and supporter of faculty research on learning as well as evidence-based pedagogy and curricular design. 

The Vice Chancellor has leadership and oversight responsibility for all faculty members in the interdisciplinary academic department, the Center for Learning Innovation (CLI). UMR faculty types include tenured/tenure-track faculty and student based faculty (full-time lecturers and teaching specialists). The CLI is represented through governance by a four-person Directorship Committee. Members of the Directorship Committee serve on the Vice Chancellor’s Leadership Team, which includes other key academic leaders. Ongoing collaboration with the student development leadership and staff is expected, to sustain UMR’s established, integrated approach to learning and development.

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Advises the Chancellor on academic matters, working collaboratively with the Chancellor to advance the campus vision, strategic priorities, and related innovation.
  • Works collaboratively with the other officers of the University of Minnesota system to meet the objectives of the University of Minnesota System Strategic Plan and UMR’s Strategic Plan.
  • Serves as a member of the Chancellor’s staff, provides academic leadership, and works collaboratively with other members of the Chancellor’s Senior Advisory Council. 
  • Builds academic partnerships with the other campuses of the University of Minnesota, Mayo Clinic, and other higher education institutions and industries to meet the workforce and innovation needs for Rochester and southeast Minnesota.
  • Manages the policies and processes associated with the accreditation of the campus, including ensuring that the assessment plan is enacted.
  • Hires, oversees, leads, and supports faculty, housed in the all-campus, interdisciplinary Center for Learning Innovation (CLI). Works closely with faculty to support their development in learning research, teaching, and service. Conducts annual reviews and provides oversight of tenure and promotion processes according to University of Minnesota System processes and procedures. 
  • Provides budgetary oversight for academic annual operating budgets.
  • Seeks foundation and grant support for academic innovation aligned with the campus vision. 
  • Works collaboratively and strategically with the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Engagement and Success, to ensure coordination and intentionality across academic and student development. 


Candidates for UMR’s Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Innovation must have the following qualifications:

  • A distinguished record of academic achievement that commands the respect of the academic community and allows for appointment to a tenured full professorship in a learning research focused environment.
  • A distinguished research record in areas related to learning innovation in higher education, such as the scholarship of teaching and learning; disciplinary-based research (e.g. chemistry education, biology education, math education, etc.); cognitive science; educational psychology; or another arena of higher education learning and innovation inquiry.
  • A proven record of successful academic administrative experience including the ability to serve as a catalyst for learning-related research and innovation among faculty; to support creative, evidence-based pedagogy; and to secure financial resources to support academic innovation endeavors.

The ideal candidate for the position will have the following qualifications, expertise, and characteristics:

  • A demonstrated commitment to fostering the learning-related research of faculty, and to enriching undergraduate education and the entire student experience.
  • Ability to mentor and support faculty, in 1) teaching and learning; 2) designing innovative curricula to enhance student learning and development; 3) sustaining a campus culture of creativity and wellbeing; and 4) securing funding for learning innovation endeavors.
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion, including specific endeavors to enhance undergraduate, underrepresented student success in health sciences or other STEM environments.
  • Experience with interdisciplinary collaboration and curricular change.
  • Experience in obtaining grant funding, especially for collaborative and/or interdisciplinary teaching and learning initiatives or research.
  • Superior public and interpersonal communication competence to provide strongly collaborative leadership and to model habits of interaction that ensure a campus culture of inclusivity and wellbeing including adaptability and humility.
  • An ability to work comfortably and effectively with a strong shared governance system.
  • Experience working with education and community partners to create learning opportunities for undergraduate students.

The Vice Chancellor position is a full-time, 12-month, senior administrative position. The Vice Chancellor reports to, and serves at the pleasure of, the Chancellor of the University of Minnesota Rochester. The position is open until filled. Salary is competitive and commensurate with education and experience. Qualified applicants may also be eligible for a secondary faculty appointment, contingent upon academic credentials and accomplishments.
