The Princeton University Plasma Physics Laboratory, a world-leading fusion energy research center under contract with the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE), invites applications for an Electro-Mechanical Engineer. This position will support the PPPL Engineering Collaboration Head in support of the PPPL contributions to the DIII-D National Fusion Facility in San Diego, CA. Responsibilities include the design and installation of mechanical devices that inject powders and granules to the DIII-D Tokamak, develop upgrades for high energy neutral beams, perform RF system upgrades, support the operation on the DIII-D facility and maintain an inventory of PPPL property located at DIII-D in San Diego, CA. The Electro-Mechanical Engineer is a hands-on applied engineering role which involves both creative design, light fabrication of parts and assemblies, testing, and experimental operation on DIII-D and potentially other fusion reactors worldwide. The successful candidate will be based in San Diego, CA.
- Design mechanical vacuum system configurations in development of powder dropper and granular injector. Develop and innovate present dropper designs to improve performance and reduce cross contamination.
- Engineer, build, test, and operate control systems for the above dropper project.
- Support other DIII-0 tasks e.g. Helicon design/installation, TF Reversing
- Neutral Beam 210 Co-Counter-Off-Axis project for installation and completion of several tasks.
- Bachelors in Electromechanical Engineering, or BSMEE.
- Experience in Solidworks, Matlab, Microsoft Office.
- Minimum of 2 years' experience in an electric or mechanical engineering position designing and building state of the art technology e.g. vacuum systems, robotics, plasma devices, small parts manufacturing, or structural engineering.
- Ability to use shop floor machines e.g. drill press, band saw, table saw, milling machine, belt sander, and powered hand tools required, as this job will involve light use as needed to complete the task at hand.
- Travel to other world fusion devices for installation and operations of powder and granular droppers maybe required.
