Primary Function of Organization Unit: The Center for Integrated Pest Management (CIPM) at NC State University fulfills the land-grant mission of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences by coordinating interdisciplinary teams, cultivating local to global partnerships and training the next generation of IPM practitioners. CIPM develops and advances new IPM strategies, pest analytic tools and decision support systems. As part of its Regulatory Pest Informatics frontier, CIPM aims to safeguard U.S. agriculture and natural resources and facilitate international trade by developing information systems to stop exotic invasive pests at US borders.
Essential Job Duties: As a Research Assistant, this position will focus on collection development, evaluation, analysis and communication of biological information pertaining to invasive plant pests, most of which are not in the United States. The primary responsibilities of this position will be to research, write, and present reports on various plant pests (arthropods, plant pathogens). This research will be used to develop pest forecast models to support USDA APHIS decision making processes. The work will involve performing literature searches, reviewing and interpreting highly technical scientific information and government reports, corresponding with subject matter experts, and analyzing information to produce written reports that will then be presented to a team of analysts at the USDA's Center for Plant Health Science and Technology.
Minimum Education/Experience: * Position requires a M.S. degree in crop sciences, entomology, plant pathology or a related subject area, or a Bachelor's degree in disciplines stated, with 3 or more years of relevant training and experience. * Candidate's must have an educational background and/or work experience studying arthropods or pathogens that are plant pests.
Department Required Skills: * Use of computer word processing, spreadsheet, mapping and other computer-related skills. * Ability to perform extensive literature reviews to acquire the most up-to-date information on pests with the ability to develop, evaluate and draw inferences from the data. * Ability to conceptualize and complete analyses that clearly and completely address prescribed objectives. * Ability to develop high quality written analyses that require minimal editing. * Ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a team to meet agreed upon deadlines. * Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Preference is of applicants who have two or more years of experience studying pests of agricultural crops or forestry. Experience studying invasive pests and/or conducting risk analysis is preferred.
