Network Systems Engineer
Serve as a member of the network team and support the day-to-day management and operation of the campus data network. Install, configure, test and maintain network infrastructure devices and systems, ensuring integrity between hardware, operating systems and networks. Collaborate with network team to assist with the planning and management necessary to ensure appropriate network architecture, topology and transmission media for the institution. Collaborate within IT and with other departments and divisions on projects for the development of systems and/or network configurations.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Install, configure, maintain, and support network infrastructure equipment including switches, routers, virtual private network devices, firewalls, intrusion detection systems, VoIP telephony systems and components, and wireless access points and control systems.
Assume a collaborative role in the design and standardization of system and/or network configuration, including hardware, software, and integration requirements.
Collaborate with network team in the selection or recommendation and configuration of network and/or third party application programs to provide improved response time, quality and cost effectiveness.
Collaborate with network team in the development of network architecture, topology and transmission media appropriate for the installation.
Collaborate with network team to select or recommend network standards and protocols.
Collaborate with the systems administration team for proper assignment and configuration of network resources supporting virtualized environments or for other servers.
Provide technical support on computer and network systems to other computer system administrators or support staff to ensure the successful provision of campus-wide computer communications.
Monitor and develop recommendations for improvement of methodologies and standards for monitoring network traffic, usage and performance.
Maintain, update and implement standards for documentation of equipment and network diagrams.
Evaluate user needs, systems and new technologies to recommend the most effective communication and transmission systems.
Act as either primary or secondary technical liaison for network products and system vendors.
Collaborate with network team and security team in the development and enforcement of network security procedures.
Assist in the preparation of recommendations, pilot installations, testing and evaluation, installation procedures and collaborate with teams to implement project plans and schedules for projects which will affect a segment of the university community and which utilize standard methodology.
Collaborate with network team in the design of the campus network, providing the infrastructure for access to all University and Internet information technology services.
Collaborate with network team in development and maintenance of strategic, tactical and operational plans for networking, client/server applications, and end-user access to University and Internet information technology services.
Perform other departmental duties as assigned.Qualifications:
Requires a Bachelor's Degree in a computer related field plus a minimum of one year of directly related experience; or the combination of education and experience that enable the performance of all aspects of the position.
Requires knowledge of and experience with:
-- Best practices in network systems design, integration, configuration, implementation, and management.
-- Cisco infrastructure device configuration, support and management.
-- Configuration of third generation firewalls
-- Linux, Macintosh and Windows/Intel platforms.
-- Client operating systems, enterprise database, and productivity software.
The following are preferred:
-- Experience supporting a Cisco VoIP infrastructure.
-- Configuration, management and maintenance of an enterprise wireless network infrastructure.
-- Experience supporting an enterprise class multi-building campus network.
-- Network security planning, analysis and management.
-- A valid and current Cisco certification and other relevant professional certifications.
Must have excellent customer service and interpersonal skills demonstrated both over the phone and face-to-face. Must be able to effectively communicate technical information to non-technical users verbally and in writing. Must able to work effectively in a dynamic team environment where assignments and priorities can change at a moment's notice. Must be able to make decisions on imperfect information. Relevant professional certifications preferred.
Requires ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations such as the ability to stand, walk, bend and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10-50 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visuals acuity to use a keyboard, work with network cabling and diagnostic and other common tools, and operate equipment and read technical information.
Preference will be given to applicants with VoIP/IP Telephone experience.
Work is performed in a typical computing environment with some exposure to safety and health hazards to electronics work. Traveling between campus buildings will be required to visit user locations to complete assignments. Irregular hours maybe a regular requirement for this position. After-hours on-call support is a requirement of this position.
