Summary
Reviews, negotiates, drafts and processes a variety of agreements relating to the conduct of research at Duke University with corporate, nonprofit, government and academic entities in a manner consistent with Duke University's Mission, Policies/Procedures, and approved standards including those underlying its non-profit tax status, good business judgment, contracting and academic principles and the experience of others within the Office of Research Contracts (ORC). Serves as Duke's authorized representative in external negotiations, and acts as ORC's representative in designated internal discussions. This full-time position reports directly to the Director, Government and Foundation Collaborations in ORC.

Primary Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Reviews, drafts, and processes agreements relating to the often complex research projects conducted at Duke. These agreements include sponsored research agreements, master agreements, CRADAs, research subagreements, and various other agreements as assigned, with nonprofit, government and academic collaborators and others.

Negotiates agreement terms directly with representatives of nonprofit, government and academic collaborators and sponsors in a manner maintaining good relationships with such collaborators and sponsors while effectively conveying Duke's position. Assures that the terms of each agreement are consistent with Duke policies and procedures, the specifics of each research project, applicable laws and regulations, and the interests of Duke University. Alerts the ORC Executive Director or Managing Director when a resolution is unlikely to be reached in a timely manner or when it appears that there will not be agreement on acceptable terms.

Consults with and obtains support from ORC senior personnel and other offices within the Duke School of Medicine and the University when assistance or specialized input is needed, and when approval from other offices is required.

Informs Duke faculty and research personnel of contractual requirements, including confidentiality restrictions, material use restrictions, liability issues and intellectual property rights.

Coordinates and maintains up-to-date records of all agreement negotiations, and agreements through timely and accurate entries in ORC tracking databases.

Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Education

Work requires a Bachelor's degree in a business related field.

Experience

Work requires a minimum of five years of related business/administration experience. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Preferences:
• Research administration experience
• A law degree may substitute for up to two (2) years of the required experience.

At least five (5) years' experience including the following:
• Drafting, reviewing and negotiating agreements with a variety of entities, including companies, academic centers, and government institutions.
• Knowledge of federal regulations/policies and requirements including financial research compliance

• Experience must demonstrate familiarity with policies, procedures, and standards relating to academic research and industry-university research interactions, including policy and legal issues.

• Must be a strong negotiator who can effectively present academic standards and principles both internally to faculty and staff and externally to sponsors and collaborators, including legal and intellectual property representatives.
