Applications are invited for the position of Chief, department of Medical Imaging (MI) at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (HSC) in Toronto, Canada, a fully affiliated academic Health Sciences facility of the University of Toronto. The anticipated start date is April 1, 2018, or as mutually agreed upon.
Strategic Planning for 2018-21 is currently underway at Sunnybrook HSC and the department of Medical Imaging is viewed as central and integral to achieving the corporate vision for the delivery of precision medicine and molecular diagnostics. The successful candidate will lead the department of Medical Imaging in this initiative and, while still in development, the vision contemplates a centralized platform in MI housing an "image biobank" supporting predictive image analytics developed in partnership with the Sunnybrook Research Institute (SRI). Towards this end all of the imaging technology at SRI is available for both pre-clinical and clinical research activity, inclusive of 1x1.5TMRI; 3x3TMRI, a 7T pre-clinical MRI as well as an incoming PET-3TMRI. Further, material investment in Radiation Oncology at the Odette Centre includes globally unique 1.5TMRI-Brachy capacities and the only 1.5TMR-Linac in Canada. Further the Focus Ultrasound (FUS) Foundation designated Sunnybrook a Centre of Excellence for Imaging-Guided FUS, one of only six globally and the only Canadian site, leading innovative research in brain and body applications.
The department of MI has 42 full-time, University of Toronto-appointed staff. Services and academic programs are organized in 8 Divisions - Abdominal Imaging, Breast Imaging, Emergency and Trauma Radiology, Musculoskeletal Imaging, Neuroradiology, Nuclear Medicine, Cardiothoracic Imaging, and Vascular/Interventional Radiology. Working with the Heads of the Divisions, the Chief will be responsible for clinical and academic matters within the Department; for providing institutional leadership on issues related to medical imaging and hospital strategy; and working with the Director of the Department, for ensuring effective and efficient Department operations. In this regard Sunnybrook HSC is making material investment in MI in major capital equipment & space including: 4 MRIs; 4 CTs and 1 PET/CT plus new space for team based reporting.
Medical Imaging supports an annual volume of 300,000 exams in caring for its community, and beyond, through eight comprehensive programs: Holland Musculoskeletal; Hurvitz Brain Sciences; Odette Cancer Centre; Women and Babies; Schulich Heart Centre; Trauma, Emergency & Critical Care; St. John's Rehabilitation; and Veterans and Community.
As a premier Academic Health Sciences Centre, Sunnybrook is committed to high quality inter-professional education and is the home of one of the University's four Academies for undergraduate medical education in addition to providing postgraduate and fellowship training in virtually all disciplines. The research enterprise at Sunnybrook HSC is housed in the SRI with well-established programs in basic and applied research, conducting $100 million in research each year, developing innovations in care for more than one million patients annually, and passionate about providing rewarding educational and research experiences for more than 4,000 students each year.
The successful candidate will hold an MD and have certification from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or equivalent qualifications and will be qualified to hold a clinical full time academic appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor at the University of Toronto. Equally important will be the vision to continue integration with Sunnybrook's Programs and strategic priorities as well as with our broader community; commitment to forging partnerships with other institutions to support the development of integrated delivery systems, excellent interpersonal skills; strong leadership capabilities; experience and knowledge regarding the recruitment of academic physicians; a record of peer-reviewed research; leadership in undergraduate, postgraduate, fellowship, continuing medical education or patient education; and/or leadership in model service delivery as a creative professional academic activity.
