Position Summary: The Director will serve as the lead state-level public affairs liaison and advisor on state governmental issues at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Reporting to and working with the Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs, the Director will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to broaden public support for the University and supporting the University's mission and programs. Specific duties include advocacy efforts with the Legislature, elected officials, state agencies, members of the North Carolina general public, and state relations staff at UNC General Administration. The position incumbent will coordinate University resources to research relevant issues and policies, promote University staff engagement with public entities throughout the state, and lead or participate in strategic communications efforts.

Education Requirements: Bachelor's degree in political science, government administration, business administration, public affairs, a similarly related field or a bachelor's degree with relevant work experience.

Qualification and Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in North Carolina state government, nonprofit, or other experience involving public relations advocacy. Experience should include work in state government, government relations, strategy development, constituent outreach, and targeted communications. Qualified applicants shall demonstrate an understanding of the mission, purpose, and organization of higher education institutions and their interaction with state government. Preferred qualifications include: - Demonstrated experience and proficiency in North Carolina state government functions and/or advocacy relations. - Detailed knowledge and understanding of the North Carolina legislative and executive processes. - Practical and strategic comprehension of North Carolina's state government along with having established relationships with its elected officials and agencies. - Experience with policy issues and interests impacting public higher education within the State of North Carolina. - Significant communications experience demonstrating effective oral and written skills.
