The Illinois State Archaeological Survey (ISAS), Prairie Research Institute, University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, is seeking a Field Station Coordinator to be stationed at its American Bottom Field Station in Fairview Heights, Illinois. This individual will coordinate the administrative, field, and laboratory activities of the Station with the ISAS Director, other Field Station Coordinators, and contracting agency personnel as well as serve as the point of contact between the Field Station and ISAS's Central Office and support staff.
In addition, the Field Station Coordinator will provide contracting agencies and ISAS headquarters, verbal and written correspondence as needed concerning the status of archaeological fieldwork and report preparation for agency projects; consult with the ISAS Statewide Surveys (SWS) and Special Projects Coordinators and with the contracting agency to set project priorities; organize the skills of the Field Station staff to create working groups to accomplish the tasks at hand; manage all field and laboratory activities, facilities, and vehicles of the Field Station; implementing Survey priorities and setting goals, objectives, and expectations for subordinates; supervise the activities of the Field Station Statewide Survey (SWS) staff, Research Archaeologists, Lab Supervisor, and Support Staff; work with the SWS Coordinator, Research, Project, and District Archaeologists, and Lab Supervisor to assign duties to the support staff and ensure that they fulfill their day-to-day professional and administrative responsibilities and the mission of ISAS; hire/recruit Field Station crew and in conjunction with other supervisors, oversee evaluation, discipline and termination of crew; perform annual personnel evaluations of supervisory staff; serve as a resources person within the unit and act as a liaison to other campus and community groups and various state and private organizations disseminating information about ISAS to expand internal and external program development and outreach; generally function as the lead archaeologist for all major field and analytical undertakings, providing expertise and advice to subordinates to effectively structure and control the work to ensure that it is performed competently and in a timely manner; travel, as necessary, to field sites and meetings with ISAS and IDOT administrative staff.
The successful candidate must have an M.A. in Anthropology, Archaeology, or closely related field, plus a minimum of seven years' experience in conducting archaeological field and laboratory investigations in the Eastern Woodlands cultural area and a demonstrated ability to complete projects and reports in a timely and competent manner. Candidates should have a basic familiarity with computer word processing, graphic, and database programs. Basic familiarity with Eastern Woodlands archaeological culture history and with Illinois archaeological culture history and research agendas. Basic familiarity with Federal and state of Illinois historic preservation and burial laws and regulations is required. Must possess a valid driver's license.
Must have a current affiliation with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Illinois State Archaeological Survey (ISAS).
