About the Unit
The University of Chicago Campaign: Inquiry and Impact (http://campaign.uchicago.edu), the most ambitious and comprehensive campaign in the University's history, is raising $5 billion to support faculty and researchers, practitioners and patients, and students and programs across the University. Launched in October 2014, the campaign supports priorities in every division, school, department, and institute, and aims to engage 125,000 alumni and friends over its five-year duration. The University's Office of Alumni Relations and Development (ARD) is led by Sharon Marine, who was named Vice President in August 2017. With more than 25 years of experience in higher education advancement, Marine previously served at Cornell University, Stanford University, the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business and the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
- Reporting to the Vice President of Alumni Relations and Development, the Assistant Vice President (AVP) will manage University-wide fundraising for the Humanities Division, Smart Museum of Art, Court Theatre, UChicago Arts, and a set of key arts related University priorities. The AVP will collaborate with University leaders and academic partners and provide strategic direction to associate deans and directors of development to facilitate development activity that advances priorities and maximizes philanthropic support from donors. The AVP will partner with senior ARD leaders to set fundraising goals and guide planning and strategy to achieve those goals – both annual and campaign. The AVP is a member of the senior leadership team in ARD.
- Provide strategic direction to associate deans/directors of development leading divisions, units, cross-unit initiatives, and organizational giving. Collaborate with appropriate deans, directors and staff to lead and develop the fundraising plans for these areas and programs, as well as develop cases for support.
- Serve as an adviser to academic leaders and associate deans/directors of development in effectively working together and with faculty and institutional leaders to advance priorities and meet fundraising goals.
- Manage and support the involvement of officers, boards, councils and other volunteer leaders in fundraising plans for current initiatives and programs, as well as new initiatives.
- Directly manage associate deans/directors of development (including some on a dotted line basis) and collaborate closely with other senior ARD leaders to lead teams and staff to execute advancement plans.
- Work with other ARD leaders to optimize interactions among divisional and school teams and fundraising partners in major and principal gifts, international advancement, gift planning, foundation and corporate relations, and annual giving.
- Identify and execute fundraising strategies for non-traditional prospect and donor cohorts with particular emphasis on multi-interest based strategies. Leverage resources to support new areas of University scholarship and investment as they are identified by senior leaders.
- Manage a select group of individual relationships rated at least $1M+ with primary focus on prospects supporting the assigned initiatives and programs.
- Actively participate in prospect strategy meetings. Partner with colleagues to develop and implement strategies to move prospects through the fundraising cycle.
- As a senior member of ARD, model behavior, mentor staff and develop leaders, and participate in strategic planning and policy decisions as appropriate. Actively encourage staff members' professional growth, development and participation in the life of the University.
- Manage staff and budget to execute responsibilities in an efficient, timely, and cost-effective manner. Seek opportunities for professional development that will enhance job performance.
- Serve as a lead strategist for a pool of top prospective donors on behalf of and for the benefit of the entire University.

Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree or higher required
- A minimum of ten years of professional work experience in nonprofit management, development, alumni relations, marketing, public relations, sales or similar professional work experience required.
- A minimum of four years of soliciting and closing major gifts experience required.
- A minimum of five years of management experience, including staff management, required.
- A minimum of three years of experience working closely and collaboratively with senior leadership, trustees and board members required.
- A minimum of three years of experience developing and monitoring budgets required.
- Ability to identify stakeholders and build strong collaborative relationships with them across departments and units of a large, multi-faceted University required.
- Passion for the education and research mission of a world-class university, particularly in improving the life prospects of disadvantaged individuals required.
- Expertise managing a complex prospect and donor pipeline required.
- Experience working with volunteers required.
- Strong leadership qualities, including the ability both to delegate and to execute, thereby leading by word and example required.
- Flexibility to adapt in an emerging and changing environment required.
Technical Knowledge or Skills:
- Knowledge of and commitment to best practices for higher education development required.
- Demonstrated skill and knowledge of, or ability to learn quickly, the internal workings of the University as well as the technology tools available to the Office of Alumni Relations and Development, including Griffin (the University's Donor Relationship Management System), Microsoft Windows computer environment, Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
- Willingness and ability to travel to campus and/or non-campus locations for University business.
- Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends.
