UTEP has emerged as a national leader in redefining U.S. public higher education.  The University’s unwavering commitment to ensuring both access and excellence to students in its binational metropolitan region has resulted in its standing as the only research-doctoral university in the United States with a Mexican-American majority student population. The successful creation of highly competitive academic and research programs, while maintaining a deep commitment to serving a 21st century student demographic, has changed the narrative on higher education as well as the trajectories of the lives of tens of thousands of students.

A Carnegie high-research-activity, urban university with more than 25,000 students, and nearly $95 million in annual research expenditures, UTEP is a member of The University of Texas System (www.utsystem.edu). It serves its primary constituency--residents of far west Texas, southern New Mexico, and northern Mexico—with 72 undergraduate programs, 74 master’s programs,  22 doctoral degree programs, and a growing portfolio of online degrees. With an 80% Hispanic student population— and an additional 5% from Mexico—UTEP proudly reflects the demographic composition of the binational region from which it draws 90% of its students. The Brookings Institution named UTEP the national leader in fostering social mobility through equal access to higher education in 2017. Our president, Diana Natalicio, was named one of Time’s 100 most influential people in the world in 2016 and among Fortune’s Top 50 world leaders in 2017.

The University’s mission of ensuring access is coupled with a commitment to excellence reflected in rigorous programs, which prepare students to make significant contributions to their professions, their communities and the world.  As a research/doctoral institution, UTEP fosters a climate of scholarly inquiry, with a special focus on applying innovative interdisciplinary approaches to explore and address major issues that confront the multicultural U.S.-Mexico border region.
