Responsibilities: The Associate Vice Provost for Research (VPR) reports to the Provost, and embodies the growing role and importance of research and sponsored programs at Claflin University. The Associate Vice Provost for Research will provide vision, leadership, and strategic direction for Claflin’s Office of Research and Sponsored Programs. Responsibilities will include leadership and oversight for growing Claflin’s sponsored program portfolio; pre-award proposal development and submission; award acceptance and contract negotiations; and post-award management and compliance, excluding cash management. The candidate will be responsible for the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs activities, programs, budget, operation, and personnel. The candidate will be responsible for leading the development, implementation, and maintenance of grant related policies and procedures and serve as a liaison with the Office of the Vice President for Fiscal Affairs for grant accounting related matters and financial compliance and Human Resources with regard to new positions and classification changes. The Associate Vice Provost is expected to develop a strategic plan to increase external funding and responsible award management which aligns with the Claflin’s overall Strategic Plan, serve as the Authorized Organizational Representative, and create a culture that is supportive of compliance and the expansion of sponsored activities at Claflin. Qualifications: The successful candidate should possess a master’s degree and 10+ years of experience in higher education sponsored projects. Preference will be given to candidates with the CRA Certification. The successful candidate must have the ability to implement strategies to increase the number, quality, and competitiveness of grant submissions and awards; significant experience in large grant acquisitions from external, government, or private funding entities; and experience in sponsored programs and/or research administration. The successful candidate should have experience or recognizable potential working with external constituencies such as business, industry, and governmental agencies, and a history of working collaboratively and collegially with faculty, staff, students, the community, and funding agencies. The successful candidate must have a demonstrated history of staff management; a strong analytical and budgeting background; and proven success in a sponsored program environment. The candidate should have strong interpersonal, communication, writing, training, and facilitation/collaboration skills. Closing Date: Review of applications will begin immediately.
