Job Summary/Basic Function:
Reporting to: Director of New Student & Leadership Programs

Job Summary:
Provide meaningful programs and initiatives for students and their families with the transition into and through Lamar University. These initiatives will include new student and parent orientation, parent and families programs, and leadership development programs. The Assistant Director has direct reporting responsibility to the Director of New Student and Leadership Programs.

Job Duties:
1. Provide support to the Director of New Student & Leadership Programs in all matters related to orientation, week of welcome, and year round orientation initiatives for first-year and transfer students.
2. Select and supervise the Student Orientation Leaders and Student Orientation Coordinators.
3. Oversee the development of the training program for Orientation Leaders and Orientation Coordinators.
4. Provide front-line supervision of each orientation program.
5. Coordinate a variety of parent and family programs, including Parent Association, Parent Weekends, Parent Receptions, Parent Association Newsletter, Parent Association website, and works closely with campus constituents in providing information and programming to parents and families.
6. Oversee the continuous development, implementation, and evaluation of fall and spring Week of Welcome program, marketing, execution and assessment.
7. Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of various first year programs for new students.
8. Serve as a key liaison between the university and families of current students.
9. Prepare and maintain appropriate assessment, reports, and publications.
10. Design and deliver leadership programming in consultation with the Director.
11. Assist in leadership training opportunities, in-service workshops, and summer training to the Student Government Association.
12. Assist in leadership training to students and student organizations in collaboration with staff in the Office of the Dean of Students.
13. Use web-based tools for marketing, web design, orientation records, and assessment.
14. Assist with division sponsored events such as Homecoming, Leadership Conferences, Toast to Leadership Banquet, Tailgate, and Big Red Mania.
15. Meet weekly with the Director of New Student & Leadership Programs, and attend regularly scheduled departmental meetings.
16. Participate on departmental, division, and university committees and task forces; and
17. Other duties as assigned.

Managerial Responsibilities:
1. Supervise 4 student coordinators and 36 student leaders.

Minimum Qualifications:
Job Qualifications:
1. A Master’s degree in student development, counseling, student affairs, or related field is required.
2. 1-2 years of direct experience in orientation, new student programs or student activities at a professional level.
3. 1-2 years of experience supervising paraprofessional staff members.
4. The successful candidate should possess high energy, creative problem solver with strong written and verbal communication skills, a commitment to enhancing diversity, and a track record of high productivity and job performance.

3. Supervisory and strategic planning skills.
4. Public speaking and group facilitation skills.
5. Ability to organize several projects with multiple deadlines.
6. Ability to interact effectively with students, parents, colleagues, University staff and faculty.
7. Able to use social media and web- based tools for marketing, web design, orientation registration and assessment practices for programs.
8. Appreciation for and commitment to multiculturalism and diversity.
9. Regular evening and weekend work may be required.
