Associate Chair of Industrial Design and Design for Sustainability

Job description

SCAD seeks a multidisciplinary designer who understands the human user, business context and effective application of technology to be the associate chair of the industrial design and design for sustainability departments.

These award-winning programs cultivate highly motivated, visionary students who consider business challenges while creating and communicating innovative solutions that improve lives. As the full-time associate chair of the departments at SCAD Savannah, you will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the departments and work closely with the chair of industrial design and the dean of the School of Design to provide operational support. In addition, you will work with the faculty team and department leadership to build a substantial reputation for the quality of work produced and create a strong sense of collegiality. This position also assists in the recruitment and placement of students in internships and careers. SCAD professors have the opportunity to teach in cross-disciplinary classroom environments. This is your chance to work with a team of talented students within the historic district of Savannah, Georgia, a walkable, bikeable coastal city providing a living laboratory for the study of art and design.

The ideal candidate models leadership, demonstrates superior communication skills, and ensures that all services related to the academic offerings of the department are planned and delivered at the highest quality. You should be an enthusiastic educator who possesses passion for design, a strong desire to share knowledge through experience and persistence, and the ability to motivate students and faculty to think creatively and critically. A demonstrated record of design leadership, project management, and innovative and clever product development is essential, as is a desire to mentor exceptional students. You should have a keen eye for the development of impactful product aesthetics, mastery of the design process to generate memorable solutions, and proven creation of products that became marketplace disruptors. You must be able to apply high-level theoretical and practical models to the field of industrial design in order to prepare students for rapidly evolving design careers. College-level administration and teaching experience is preferred, and the ability to efficiently manage administrative duties is required.

− Terminal degree or its equivalent in industrial design, design for sustainability or a related field
− Minimum five years of industrial design experience including design, concept to market, manufacturing and design strategy
− Knowledge of Rhino or SolidWorks software preferred
