Job Description

The College of Engineering and Computing at Missouri University of Science and Technology seeks highly qualified candidates for the position of Associate Dean for Research (ADR). The ADR will report directly to the Dean of the College and will be a key member of the College’s Leadership Team. Key Responsibilities The Associate Dean for Research will play a critical role in helping the College achieve its five-year goal of doubling research expenditures by identifying research opportunities, facilitating the creation of research relationships on and off campus, and enhancing the overall research profile and reputation of the College. Successful candidates are expected to have experience developing internationally renowned research programs and have established strong relationships with funding agencies, the national labs, and industry. Demonstrated experience in leading research teams is highly desirable. Institutional Background and Culture Founded in 1870, Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) is one of the nation’s top technological research universities and shares a land-grant heritage as one of the four campuses of the University of Missouri System. Missouri S&T has two academic colleges, the College of Engineering and Computing (CEC) and the College of the Arts, Sciences, and Business. CEC has 181 tenured and tenure track, and 35 non-tenure track faculty, and offers 17 accredited undergraduate and 19 graduate degree programs, associated with the Departments of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Engineering Management and Systems Engineering, Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and Mining and Nuclear Engineering. The College of Engineering and Computing has presently enrolled over 5200 undergraduate students and over 1450 graduate students, of which about 580 are pursuing doctoral degrees. Faculty in the College either lead or play important roles in a number of research centers, including the Materials Research Center, the Center for Biomedical Research, Center for Infrastructure Engineering Studies, Intelligent Systems Center, and the Center for Research in Energy and Environment. In addition, CEC students and faculty play critical roles in key interdisciplinary research areas highlighted in the Missouri S&T strategic plan, including infrastructure and sustainability, manufacturing and economic development, materials for extreme environments, and smart living. Missouri S&T is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a higher research activity institution, and has a diverse portfolio of NSF, NIH, DOE, industry, and private foundation grants. At the close of FY2017, research expenditures in the College were just over $25 million. Approximately 2/3 of funding comes from federal sources and 1/3 of funding comes from industry/private partnerships.
