Botanical Technologist I
This position will participate in the collection, development and maintenance of diverse plant materials in order to assist in or independently participate in the maintenance of the botanical garden and greenhouse and in the production greenhouse operations for the Beal Botanical Garden. This position will be responsible for service, maintenance and propagation activities of common and rare plants for the garden and greenhouse using special technical methods; files and maintains data on plants, aids in maintaining records of technical methods and procedures, aids in plant labeling; fills seed requests as part of the International Seed Exchange program; performs data entry for an inventory tracking system, field record keeping system and seed catalog; orders, collects, processes, stores seed for campus use and exchange with other institutions; plant bedding annuals in order to maintain plant displays; assists in placement of plants required for planting in botanic garden; operates various types of equipment in order to water, fertilize, and apply pesticides and fungicides; instructs less experienced employees and volunteers in order to maintain the plant material.
This position will be outdoors in all seasons.

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Botany or Horticulture; six months to one year of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in botanical gardening, pest control and plant identification; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and an Ornamental and Turf Pesticide Applicators Certificate. Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license. Knowledge of basic computer terminology and operations and the ability to use email and the Internet prior to completion of applicable probation or trial period.Desired Qualifications
Turf (3A) and Ornamental (3B) pesticide applicators certification; experience in plant propagation; experience working with a plant records database; must meet MSU standards for safe driving.

Work hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday from September 1 to April 30. Work hours are 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday from May 1 to August 31 and may require significant after hours, weekend and holiday work.
