Position Summary

The Director of Instructional Technology Services (ITS) is responsible for initiatives that facilitate the use of effective and innovative technology in teaching and learning at university with over 9,000 students and multiple sites. The Director works in partnership with other members of the Information Resources Division (IRD), the Center for Teaching and Learning and the UIW academic community to provide leadership and vision for technology initiatives, which support university-level classroom teaching. The Director serves as a change agent who develops strategies to encourage faculty to integrate new technologies into their classroom pedagogy. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: managing budget and personnel performing instructional services involving instructional design, video and photography services, learning management systems, technology and software training; facilitating the design of instructional technology facilities on the UIW campus in collaboration with faculty; developing and implementing partnerships within and outside the university to further the use of classroom technologies; overseeing the management and use of the learning management system (LMS) for blended and online teaching; planning and delivering technology and software training which focuses on effective use of technology in teaching and learning; grant writing and assessing instructional technology services.

Essential Duties

  • Supervises Instructional Technology Services (ITS) staff as required, including both professional and student workers. Performs annual evaluations. Oversees instructional designers, media specialists and LMS support staff.
  • Designs and oversees training and instructional design activity, which assists faculty members with integration of technology into their classroom pedagogy. Participates in the delivery of training with other ITS staff. Collaborates with academic programs to provide training targeted to their disciplines. Collaborates with the Center for Teaching and Learning in the development of training.
  • Description of Job Duty Develops and manages the ITS budgets. Follows university procedures in purchasing technology and managing areas under his/her control. Ensures that budget is not overspent.
  • Builds internal and external partnerships to support technology integration at university sites. Assesses instructional needs. Develops strategic plans to create state-of-the art classroom facilities. Develops short-term and long-range plans for the ITS. Seeks funding, established timelines and identifies tasks needed to reach objectives.
  • Serves as a leader in the area of instructional technology for the university, researching the latest trends that can be applied to better learner outcomes. Serves as a change agent for classroom technology integration. Serves on the IRD management team. Serves on UIW committees. Plans outreach initiatives that inform the UIW community about ITS services. Participates in the Academic Technology Advisory Committee.

 

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of technologies used in teaching and learning. Knowledge of instructional design theory and practices. Understanding of learning theory and practices as they relate to teaching in higher education. Knowledge of online learning and learning management systems. Knowledge of personnel management and budgetary management. Teaching ability, effective oral and written communication skills. Skill in using computers, other technologies and software for teaching, productivity and data analysis. Knowledge of video, audio, visual and web-based technologies. Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures. Employee shall adhere to all applicable rules and regulations of the University, the Conference, and the NCAA.

 

Required Education

Master’s Degree in Instructional Technology or equivalent discipline.

Required Work Experience

Three-years of experience in any of various educational environments or instructional and/or technology fields with a teaching emphasis. Management experience, including budget and supervision of personnel.

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. in instructional technology or related field. Prefer five-years of experience in higher education instructional technology. Three-years of budget and supervision of personnel experience. College-level teaching.
