Assistant or Associate Director for Professional and Executive Training

The College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks applicants for an Assistant or Associate Director for Professional and Executive Training. The Assistant/Associate Director will assist units in the College of Engineering with external relations in the professional and executive training space, identifying and building upon leads to potential industry and government agency clients interested in training and technical consulting services. This position will coordinate and/or lead internal efforts to identify and leverage unique competence and resources in the College that can be marketed and delivered to such external clients. The Assistant/Associate Director will report to the Associate Dean for Engineering Graduate, Professional and Online Programs, who reports to the Dean of the College of Engineering.

Specific duties and responsibilities include the following, but may vary depending on position level. Individuals at the higher, Associate Director, level will be expected to serve as a lead in these areas.
  • Assist with identifying opportunities for generating excess revenue through professional and executive training and/or technical consulting services from corporations, government agencies, and organizations across technical disciplines represented in the College of Engineering.
  • Assist in managing external customer relationships to ensure a high degree of responsiveness and excellence in performance and execution. This includes close coordination with the research centers, academic units, and the College of Engineering Office of Corporate Relations and Research, as well as staff in the Center for Professional and Executive Training and Education with responsibility for career services, internships, and industry-sponsored projects.
  • Coordinate the organization and potential delivery of technical training materials.
  • Work closely with units on the development of marketing material for print, video, and web-based distribution to promote training and workforce development programs, as well as technical consulting services, to potential customers. This includes close coordination with research centers, academic units, and the College of Engineering Office of Marketing and Communications, for example, in holding outreach and networking events with in-person demonstrations.
  • Maintain effective lines of communication with all College academic and research units to ensure that available resources and opportunities are widely disseminated and leveraged. This includes assisting with the production of annual reports and presentations to College administrators and unit heads.
  • Oversee the implementation of a standard cost structure for training programs and technical consulting services, upon consultation with leadership; coordinate the efforts with college and non-college units.
  • Work with appropriate teams to develop and implement processes and tools for effective and timely management, tracking, and internal reporting of program activities/schedule/budget.
  • Some travel required.
  • Other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS FOR ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

Minimum qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a technology, business or related field.
  • 3 years of experience in program management.
  • Strong proficiency in all forms of communication and ability to be a team player.
  • Strong organizational skills that reflect ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail.
  • Proven analytical and project management skills.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and decision making to identify issues and propose solutions.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite and productivity tools (e.g. Outlook, Excel, Word, & PowerPoint).


Preferred qualifications:
  • Master's degree in a technology-related field.
  • Experience working in project/program coordination in an academic research environment.
  • Familiarity with technical concepts and terminology such as cyber security, energy delivery systems, software development, and computing services.
  • Ability to balance customer-service, administrative, and financial demands on a daily basis.
  • Ability to design, coordinate, execute, and manage programs in numerous disciplines.
  • Experience working with large federal government entities and/or large technology corporations.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, particularly in technical marketing, education and training development.
  • Proficient with web authoring tools (e.g., Dreamweaver)


QUALIFICATIONS FOR ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR

Minimum qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a technology, business or related field.
  • 5 years of experience successfully managing an education/training or related program, with at least a portion of this experience in technical education/training.
  • Strong proficiency in all forms of communication and ability to be a team player.
  • Strong organizational skills that reflect ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail.
  • Proven analytical and project management skills, specifically in the areas of training, outreach, and development.
  • Strong leadership skills that reflect ability to use independent judgment and decision making to proactively identify issues and propose and implement recommendations for solutions.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite and productivity tools (e.g. Outlook, Excel, Word, & PowerPoint).

  • Master's degree in a technology-related field.

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible academic professional position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. Salary and position level are commensurate with experience and qualifications.
