Lab Animal Resources
Design and implement programs for the health and welfare of the animals in the Duke Research holdings to enhance species specific behavior and comply with regulatory guidelines. Includes:operant conditioning for research and clinical purposes, behavioral assessments and reviews,socialization of newly acquired animals for pair housing and acclimation to employees, working with lab managers on re-socialization and housing schematics, enrichment as clinical treatment, review of all enrichment documentation daily/weekly, and other initiatives to optimize the overall program.To include, ordering of supplies for behavioral enhancement, enrichment and special feeding strategies.
• Monthly Behavior & Enrichment Calendar. Create activities throughout the month for the B&E Tech. and CMS staff to complete for all DLAR housed animals Dog, Pig, NHP, Ferret, Cat, Farm Animal Enrichment Behavioral Assessments Action Plan for Abnormal Behaviors TV Rotation Inventory NHP Exposure Kits
• Large Animal Import/Export from unapproved vendors. May travel with NHPs to/from airport as needed. Complete paperwork appropriate for this task. Coordinate with B&E tech to perform daily health checks, assess new animals, and provide enrichment during the quarantine period
• Making sure DLAR stays in compliance with Institutional Enrichment Policies Including IACUC, OLAW, OAWA, USDA, AAALAC Intl. Policies Take on various projects as needed per DLAR administration or IACUC/OAWA. Prepare annual exemption reports for NHP PI's after review/attempts for resocialization
• Develop and implement operant training program for dogs, pigs, NHPs and other species as applicable in coordination with B&E tech. Training NHPs to voluntarily participate in veterinary procedures. Blood draws, injections, SQ fluids, oral exams, temperature. Presenting back, arms/legs, face as necessary. Training Dogs. Walking on leash, sitting on scale, presenting paws for inspection. Basic commands such as sit, stay, lay down. Training Pigs: Stand on scale, lay down and roll onto side
• Serve as Chair of the Duke Enrichment Committee Continuing to stay abreast of environmental enrichment trends and present them to the group. Organize monthly meetings and provide updates. Send letter of exemptions to AV for approval and IACUC/OAWA
• Working with OAWA/IACUC to write and update enrichment and social housing policies
• Conduct animal training/behavioral management classes in coordination with the Education and Training Coordinator on species specific behavior and appropriate human/animal interaction. Help expand knowledge to CMS, Vet Staff, and Lab Staff on natural behaviors of animals Including Normal/Abnormal
• Orientation training on NHP Cage SafetyPowerPoint presentation of NHP cage safety. Hands-on training with laboratory personnel and DLAR CMS staffon cage safety
• Socialization of New Animals to form pairs/groups in coordinationwith B&E Tech Schedule socialization of new social species as applicable. Evaluation groups and/or pairs for compatibility, Record observations
• Coordinate with clinical veterinary staff to create/redesign behavioral/enrichment plans for individual animals as needed
• Assisting with space allocation and working with Ops Managers on caging, changes to feeding schedules/amounts, social housing, housing schematics, etc.
• Maintain budget for the enrichment program. Inventory control (order, streamline enrichment supplies/products) Ensure items are appropriate for species
• Develop and implement DLAR Enrichment Policies, Guidelines, and SOPs Guidelines for Species Appropriate Toys & Treats. Picture sheets of appropriate toys per species. Guidelines for appropriate treats per species
• At least 5% clinical veterinary technical duties (which includes but is not limited to Special Projects)
• Performs on-call requirements as assigned which include weekend and holiday rotations.
• Other duties as deemed necessary by the supervisor.
Large animal handling skills with particular emphasis on skill set with NHPs; Rodent, guinea pig, rabbit, etc. handling; Phlebotomy; Placing catheters; Intensive care and emergency care; Antibody production process; Able to train PI staff in lab animal technical skills; Interact more professionally and knowledgeably w/ high risk, high visibility groups.

Work requires Associate's Degree in Veterinary Technology with RVT.Obtain LATG within 24 months of hire, LAT desirable.
Work requires four years of experience in a laboratory, animalcare facility or related setting to become familiar with the technicaltasks involved in the care of animals (at least three of which was in alab animal facility, desirable).OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
