Behavioral Sciences & Social Medicine – College of Medicine
The Department of Behavioral Sciences and Social Medicine is seeking applications for a Clinical Assistant Professor in Medical Spanish. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary faculty with expertise and interest in psychology, behavioral health, public health, epidemiology, bioethics, philosophy, history, and Medical Spanish, who engage in research and teaching of medical students and residents as well as undergraduate and graduate students.
The Florida State University College of Medicine (COM) aims to provide community-based medical education that emphasizes the biopsychosocial model, primary care, and care for underserved populations. The COM is located on the campus of Florida State University and strives for collaborative culture across departments as well as University-wide. COM faculty are distributed in other sectors of the University, and across six regional COM campuses in Tallahassee, Sarasota, Orlando, Daytona Beach, Ft. Pierce, and Pensacola, FL. The successful candidate would be expected to teach Medical Spanish elective courses to medical students in their four years of medical education. The Medical Spanish classes content reflect the medical curriculum of the FSU College of Medicine.
Keep accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and progress.
Expected to continue developing the Medical Spanish Program and provide leadership in the process of Medical Spanish curriculum review, modification, and evaluation in order to continue making the program successful.
Maintain current and depth of knowledge in assigned area of responsibility and use methods and materials appropriate to the Medical Spanish classes.
Commitment to FSU College of Medicine Mission and students’ success through advising, mentoring, as well as service.


Doctoral or comparable degree in Spanish, Education, Linguistics, or Health Professions.
Native or near native Spanish/English Language fluency.
Experience in designing and teaching Spanish language courses at the university level.
Evidence of skills and flexibility in adapting teaching pedagogy and techniques to different levels of students' content needs and individual learning styles.


Experience with the Spanish Language in medical settings and/or Familiarity with medical student culture.
Familiarity with American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) proficiency guidelines integrated in communicative teaching methods.
Teaching style that is accommodating, nurturing, engaging and appreciative of the learner’s uniqueness.
Experience in integrating the Medical Spanish in the Medical Education curriculum and its application to Latino health and culture in the community.
Professional experience with university graduate students.
Experience teaching the Spanish Language to a specific profession, subject or purpose (teaching Spanish for specific purposes).
