Position Summary

Michigan State University invites applicants for a 12- month appointment as a Research Associate (postdoctoral research fellow) under the supervision of Professor Kyle Whyte in the Department of Philosophy in the College of Arts & Letters. The fellowship seeks to support a scholar who specializes in research and teaching on Indigenous peoples and the environment. This specialization includes diverse areas, not limited to Indigenous topics on climate justice, food sovereignty, environmental justice, knowledge systems (e.g. traditional ecological knowledge), ecology, environmental ethics, health and wellness. This fellow will have an unparalleled opportunity to develop their research and teaching at the nexus of Indigenous peoples and environmental issues.

The primary responsibilities of the fellow will be to develop programming, bibliographic materials, publications and online resources that will increase public and scholarly awareness of Indigenous peoples, contributions to and leadership in environmental studies and/or food studies. The specific responsibilities in these areas will be developed collaboratively with the supervisor and will privilege as much as feasible the fellow’s own specializations.  

The Research Associate (postdoctoral research fellow) will be expected to be in residence at Michigan State University during the entire 12 month appointment.

MSU offers many programs for research at the nexus of environmental and food science and Indigenous peoples. Programs include Environmental Science & Policy Program, the Native American Institute, the Center for Coupled Human-Natural Systems, the American Indian Studies Program, the Center for Regional Food Systems and the Indigenous Law and Policy Center. Faculty and students who participate in these groups offer numerous opportunities for participation in scholarly communities.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants should be scholars with a PhD in any humanities, social science field, science field or interdisciplinary field (e.g. Indigenous studies) who specialize in any of the previously described research areas. Related research areas, such as Indigenous science, technology and society or Indigenous health and wellness, are also encouraged to apply, given the connections to food and environmental issues.
