RESEARCH TECHNICIAN II

Work Performed

Perform basic science research experiments utilizing biochemical, molecular biology, tissue culture and mouse models to investigate the molecular basis of antibody affinity maturation.

Occupational Summary:
The Ciofani Laboratory is seeking an energetic and highly motivated Research Technician to work in the area of immunology, transcriptional regulation, mouse genetics, and development. We seek someone to perform a variety of complex, technical duties involved in laboratory maintenance, and conducting experiments in support of Duke University research operations.

Principal Responsibilities:
  • Assist with experiments in molecular biology, and immunology. This includes, but is not limited to, recombinant DNA methods, PCR, chromatin immunoprecipitation, cell culture, and flow cytometry
  • Participate in maintenance of lab mouse strains, including genotyping, mating, and weaning
  • Maintain sufficient inventory of laboratory materials, including ordering and unpacking of delivered equipment and supplies
  • Participate in laboratory meetings, and review literature applicable to the research area.
  • Perform independent research project and training of new lab members when sufficient skills are acquired
  • Document, compile, analyze, and draw tentative conclusions from experimental results -Setup, operate, and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment
  • Perform other duties as requested by the Principal Investigator or senior lab staff


Competitive Qualifications:
  • Generally experienced in molecular biology (PCR, DNA/RNA isolation, cell culture) and handling mice (breeding, weaning, genotyping)
  • Detail-oriented, well-organized, excellent critical thinking and communication skills -Able to work independently and as a team member
  • Able to learn complex tasks with general instruction -Able to manage multiple and varying priorities in a dynamic and competitive environment
  • Computer skills an asset, including knowledge of command line and programming languages


Preferred Requirements:
  • B.S. or M.S. (M.S. preferred) in Biological Sciences or a related scientific discipline. Preference will be given to applicants with previous hands-on experience in molecular biology techniques and human cell culture.
  • Working knowledge of molecular biology equipment and software platforms, specifically RNA purification and cDNA synthesis.
  • Proficiency with standard software and statistical analysis is required (e.g. Microsoft Office).
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented.
