Primary Function of Organization Unit: The Institute for Transportation Research and Education (ITRE) is an inter-institutional research center administered by North Carolina State University. Located within the University's visionary Centennial Campus, ITRE conducts surface, water, and air transportation research, while providing professional training and educational opportunities. The Institute serves all 16 statewide campuses in the University of North Carolina (UNC) system and partners with transportation professionals around the globe. The University of North Carolina, Office of the President, designated ITRE in a Memorandum of Understanding to work in partnership with the Technical University of Lisbon in the area of Transportation and Environment. ITRE became a member of the North Carolina Transportation Consortium in 2002, and was the lead institute for the Southeastern Transportation Center (a USDOT University Transportation Center) from 1989-1995. ITRE is a university-based institute committed to leadership in the study of surface and air transportation issues through fostering analytical thinking, integrating technology in education and research, serving as a catalyst for problem solving, and cultivating professionals and students dedicated to excellence in transportation.
Essential Job Duties: The Research Assistant independently leads and conducts research on transportation policy and economic assessments. The topics can include but not be limited to asset management, transportation policy, logistics, highways, airports, ports, ferries, bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and others. the Research Assistant will be responsible for field data collection efforts, and will lead students in the development and implementation of thorough collection and analysis methodologies. The Research Assistant will analyze data and make recommendations to Highway Group Managers on adjustments to current research methods, and will prepare and deliver final reports and presentations to clients. This Research Assistant is required to move equipment to carry out the core functions of the position on a regular basis.
Minimum Education/Experience: Master's degree in Applied Research or Economics required, plus relevant experience using applied research methods to study transportation policy and related economic analysis. A combination of education and experience may be substituted for the required education (typically 7 or more years of directly related education and training is required.)
Department Required Skills: * Strong analytical, writing, and communication skills. * Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access (or similar software). * Must demonstrate a basic understanding of policy and economic analysis concepts. * Must possess good organizational skills and be detail oriented. * Must be able to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work independently as well as be part of a team. * Must be able to make presentations utilizing good communication and facilitation skills as the position will be required to give presentations to steering committees on research. * Demonstrate a high level of initiative and ability to multi-task. * Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds occasionally with or without a reasonable accommodation.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Three or more years of closely related experience.
Necessary Licenses and Certifications: This position is required to travel frequently to carry out the core functions of the position. Travel is often to rural areas where public transportation is not available. A valid North Carolina driver's license will be required by date of employment and must be maintained as a condition of employment.
