Senior Professional Research Assistant

Job Summary:

The successful candidate will be investigating the role of the tumor suppressor p53 in mouse development and tumorigenesis using molecular and cellular biology techniques including but not limited to:

  • DNA and RNA preparation, PCR, RT-qPCR
  • Tissue preparation for paraffin embedding, sectioning, immunostaining
  • Microscopy imaging
  • Mammalian tissue culture, flow cytometry and western blotting
  • Mouse colony management, necropsy and surgery
  • Maintaining meticulous laboratory records, supplies, and sample records
  • The day-to-day operation of the lab, including but not limited to ordering supplies, inventories, preparing solutions

The successful candidate is expected to design and execute experiments, perform scientific troubleshooting, data analysis and presentation, write and adhere or modify standard operational procedures or protocols. This position requires independent research, survey of literature, solving non-routine problems, testing of new procedures. The senior research professional will present at lab meetings and participate in the preparation of manuscripts or grants. The successful candidate will oversee general compliance with laboratory safety requirements and institutional animal programs, train new and existing employees, maintain supplies and inventory, hazardous/biological waste disposal and adhere to University of Colorado operational procedures and policies.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities
  • Advanced knowledge of the field of cancer or vascular biology
  • Capable of reading, understanding and researching scientific literature
  • Experience in basic laboratory techniques including RNA/DNA/Protein isolation techniques, Western blotting, gene expression assays (qPCR and RT-qPCR)
  • Proficient with immunostaining assays
  • Advanced computer skills in data entry, MS Word, Outlook, Excel and Internet use.
  • Highly motivated, eager to learn and taking initiative
  • Great organizational record keeping abilities
  • Strong work ethic and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Capable of following standard operating procedures for routine assays and capable of developing new assays
  • Able to work independently and in a team setting
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal English communication skills

Supervision Exercised

This position can have supervisory responsibilities of medical students, undergraduates and research or student assistants.

Conditions of Employment:

This position may require occasional extended hours and/or time outside of normal working hours including weekends and holidays depending on ongoing experiments.


Minimum Requirements
  • M.S. degree in Biology or related fields
  • Minimum of 2 years of laboratory experience
  • Research experience in cancer or vascular biology

Preferred Qualifications:
  • PhD in biology or related fields
  • Extensive experience in cancer or vascular biology
  • Experience with mouse husbandry, colony maintenance, mouse genetics, familiarity with mouse surgery, or murine development assays
