Nature of Work

The Department of Pediatrics Section of Emergency Medicine has an opening for a full-time Assistant Professor or Senior Instructor Pediatric Emergency Medicine Physician at the Children's Hospital Colorado, Colorado Springs Emergency Department.

The Medical Director will provide strategic and operational medical leadership and direction for emergency department operations. They will work collaboratively with the Nursing and Operational Directors, Patient-Family Experience Department, Quality/Patient Safety/Process Improvement and the Faculty providers to develop and maintain ambulatory operations which support CHCO's mission and values in an organized, effective, innovative, and quality- and service-oriented manner.

Scope of responsibility will include practice management, operational efficiency, business development, and delivery of outstanding faculty, patient and referring provider service. Has primary responsibility for establishing accountability with providers regarding CHCO policies and procedures, operational standards, and quality and service excellence initiatives.

Key member of CHCO care delivery leadership team and participates in all strategic discussions and operational planning for their practice and/or unit.

Definition: "Providers" in this document refers to physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners who work in the clinical area overseen by the Medical Director.

Characteristics/Requirements of a Medical Director:

  • Clinically active and respected
  • Board certified or eligible in Pediatric Emergency Medicine
  • Active clinical practice at CHCO
  • Appointment as full-time academic faculty at the University of Colorado School of Medicine (CUSOM)
  • Motivates excellence & teamwork among providers & staff, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Exemplary leadership with regards to conflict resolution among all team members
  • Strong leadership skills, including interpersonal communication, interdisciplinary collaboration, problem resolution, decision-making, and project/change management
  • Ability to integrate clinical, quality/patient safety, management & financial concepts within an academic pediatric healthcare setting
  • Experience in leading high-performing, cross-functional teams, designing & implementing processes for strong & effective clinical and practice management operations

Accountability

  • Direct report to Section Head, Emergency Medicine, Department of Pediatrics and the Associate Chief Medical Officer (ACMO) for CHCO Colorado Springs
  • This is an at-will position. Performance will be reviewed annually by the Section Head of Emergency Medicine and CHCO Colorado Springs ACMO with input from CHCO Nursing and Operational leadership, other CHCO staff (as appropriate) and applicable CUSOM faculty and providers.



Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience.
  • MD or DO and Board certified or eligible in Pediatric Emergency Medicine
  • Minimum of 3 years of hospital-based pediatric emergency medicine administrative experience
  • Minimum of 3 years of hospital-based clinical pediatric emergency medicine experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1-2 years of Previous leadership experience
  • 4 or more years of significant hospital-based pediatric emergency medicine administrative experience
  • 4 or more years of hospital-based clinical pediatric emergency medicine experience
