POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
PROFESSOR AND HEAD, DEPARTMENT OF CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION
COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT URBANA-CHAMPAIGN

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction is seeking applications, nominations, and recommendations for a senior scholar with a distinguished research, teaching and service record to serve as head of the department. This individual will provide vision and leadership to innovatively address challenges facing today's learners by advancing knowledge and impacting state, national and international policies from the platform of a major research land-grant university.

The Department consists of a community of internationally and nationally recognized faculty as well as emerging scholars, from diverse backgrounds. Research anchors work at the graduate level, and is organized into four program areas: Curriculum, Aesthetics, and Teacher Education (CATE); Digital Environments for Learning, Teaching & Agency (DELTA), Language and Literacy (L&L); and Mathematics, Science, and Engineering (MSE). Undergraduate programs focus on global and local concerns of pre-service teacher education in early childhood, elementary, middle grades and secondary education. Faculty contribute significantly to the College's licensure degree programs, which are administrated at the College-level. The Department contributes to the Learning and Educational Studies program, a recently developed non-licensure undergraduate major in the College that prepares graduates for educationally relevant design, development, and research careers across all sectors of society.

The department head has the administrative support of an associate head for graduate programs, program area chairs, as well as administrative assistance, and works collaboratively with a College executive leadership team committed to transformative education.

The College provides strong support for research through the Bureau of Educational Research, and opportunities abound for collaboration within the College and across campus focused on topics including STEM education, urban and rural education, family and community engagement, supporting beginning teachers, learning sciences, innovations in educational technology, bilingual education, and evaluation and assessment. Collaborative research is encouraged on the campus through a range of initiatives including interdisciplinary institutes of which the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications are two examples. Faculty in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction are funded by the National Science Foundation, Institute of Education Sciences, U. S. Department of Education, National Institutes of Health, Illinois State Board of Education and private foundations

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction, ranked twelfth in the nation by U.S. News and World Report (2017), is dedicated to excellence in research, teaching, and service. Central to the Department's mission is to address critical issues of learning, teaching, and social justice at global and local levels. In this pursuit, faculty and graduate students employ varied research approaches in varied educational settings, and prepare educational professionals at graduate and undergraduate levels who seek deep interconnections among theory, research, and practice.
