Position Summary


At Stony Brook Medicine, our Staff Assistant in Healthcare Teleservices is the first contact between Stony Brook Medicine, the general public and the private practice physicians population and must exemplify the highest level of guest relations.


Duties of a Staff Assistant in Healthcare Teleservices may include the following but are not limited to:

  • The incumbent must exercise good judgement in dealing with sensitive, confidential information.
  • The incumbent must be able to make appropriate decisions based upon presenting problems.
  • This position is responsible for scheduling appointments in IDX scheduling system to fulfill the requirements of the department to include scheduling appointments, cancelling and viewing appointments, verification of patient registration, physician bookings. With the help of a computerized database and other resource materials, provide a quick response to visitor/phone inquiries.
  • The incumbent will be responding to patient care inquiries, health information and referrals which may be considered sensitive and/or confidential.
  • This position will function independently, on a day to day basis, with the supervision from the immediate supervisor.

Required Qualifications: Associate Degree or in lieu of 60 semester credits for an associates degree with Call Center experience. Strong communication skills. Must be computer literate and knowledgeable in MS Office. EWS Cerner Scheduling experience. Experience and skill on focusing on details and accuracy, multi-tasking and follow-through. Candidate must demonstrate experience and expertise in speaking with customers and can work well with persons who are under stress (such as sick patients and their distress family members).


Preferred Qualifications: Previous work in healthcare setting and knowledge of medical terminology is helpful. Previous experience dealing with physician and patient inquiries is preferred. Experience with telephone consoles, computers, public contact and data collection is desired. Prior experience and knowledge of ECHO software. Experience with Microsoft Word .Knowledge of medical terminology is helpful. Candidate must demonstrate experience and expertise in speaking with customers and can work well with persons who are under stress (such as sick patients and their distress family members). Previous work in healthcare setting is preferred.
